You Don't Have to be a Teenager to Enjoy this Book!

I was literally transported back to age 14 when the rights of passage between childhood and adulthood were marked by success and failure in a competitive setting. "Stepping Up" was a book I could not put down. There is a little of Ernie Dolan in all of us. The author obviously knows his hoops and the basketball action is so real I was reminded of the "words eye view" that only the maestro Chick Hearn could deliver. It is even more difficult to convey the action in written form than verbal form. Mark Fink is a fabulous writer, who definitely gets it, delivers and has "stepped up" big time.

For Young Hoops Fanatics

When it comes to YA, there are suspension bridges of disbelief and there are suspension bridges of disbelief. This one puts the Golden Gate to shame. So if you're a fan of realistic YA in the sports genre, you'll probably get a few chuckles out of this and write a two-word review: "Yeah, right." Three stars.

But I'll be kind and take it from the point of view of a middle school-aged boy who loves basketball and hates reading, loves large font and hates reading, and loves happy endings and hates reading. From that point of view, this is a 3-pointer instead of a 3-star-er. And it hits from well outside the arc, too.

For one, it's about two best friends who go to a basketball camp where a near-tragedy unfolds endangering lives and NO PARENTS ARE CONTACTED. The boys are 14, so I guess you'd expect as much, right? (JK, as they say.) As for happy endings, Mark Fink does not settle for one -- he runs up the score by taking our protagonist seven years into the future for even more good news. Whew! One can dream, I guess, and sometimes books are the medium for that dreaming.

All that said, I'll praise the book on two counts especially: As with John Coy, you get some easily-read but technically-accurate description of game action. A lot of boys speak that language. The other highlight is the humor. Fink hits the right note in back-and-forth badinage, and I found myself chuckling at some of the one-liners. Better yet, some of it is put-down humor. Now there's a writer who knows his audience.

For its demographic, STEPPING UP is a wise purchase. It's fairly clean with only one or two mild profanities. Beyond that (and under its bridge), the book is about as middle reader-friendly as you're going to get and may even appeal to the struggling reader in high school. Keeping my inner cynic at arms length, then, I'd say not bad -- not bad at all.

Great book for middle school boys!

Ernie and his best friend Mike go to summer camp every year, and this year, Mike chooses basketball camp. Ernie's okay with that until one of the other campers, Rick Craig, gives him a hard time about his game and about his stuttering, saddling him with the nickname "Choke". Mike excels in basketball and gets along with the other boys well, while Ernie struggles. I loved this paragraph (page 51): Life is not fair if an idiot like Craig can be so popular. I wonder what it's like to be the guy everyone respects and wants to hang with. Just once, I'd like to be that guy."

Ernie gets his chance after Mike and Rick make some bad decisions and Ernie saves them from a fire. Ernie rockets to popularity, but as with every element in this book, this rise is believable, and Ernie's reaction to it seems true-to-life. Once again, Mr. Fink nails the teen-age voice, describes the angst Ernie feels at a variety of situations with pitch-perfect detail, AND adds basketball plays to the mix. Exactly what I want.

About the Author

Derek Dalton is an Associate Professor in Criminal Justice at Flinders University Law School. His research interests cluster around the conflation of homosexuality and criminality. In 2012 he co-edited ‘Policing Sex’ (Routledge) with Paul Johnson. More recently, a project exploring tourism in sites where major crime has occurred (e.g. Auschwitz, the ‘Killing Fields’ of Cambodia, Port Arthur in Tasmania etcetera) has evolved over eight years of research.

Gundersnap has much greater concerns than Princes and unicorns, though.

First, there's Gortle, a dwarf from Gundersnap's castle, who has come to keep Gundersnap company. In other kingdoms, dwarves are used as entertainment and are commanded to do tricks that Gundersnap considers rude and demeaning. To her, Gortle is a friend, and she is determined that he will be treated with respect. This is hardly a problem in the South Turret, but the rest of Camp Princess is a different story.

Additionally, Gortle brings with him the news that Gundersnap's Queen mother has taken her own, personal, favorite horse into battle! Aside from being a dear friend, Menschmik, the pony, is hardly battle ready. How dare her mother take her pony!

Who could even think about Princes and unicorns at a time like this? Suddenly, it's starting to look like things are more connected than they appear. Gundersnap may have to hope that the rumors are not only true, but that both Princes and unicorns are more dependable than she expects.

Not as lighthearted as the first story in the series, Camp Princess 1: Born to Rule (Camp Princess), and almost more lovable because of it, the latest romp through Camp Princess is as sweet as the last. With another part of the tapestry complete, it appears that Princess Kristen is up next.

I preordered this book - received it a week ago and LOVE it! I started one of the patterns and am very pleased with the results. Written directions are clear and easy to follow. Special techniques have great explanations/directions. All of the patterns are stylish and fun. If you love to knit buy this book.

Not what I thought it was.

This book nicely describes how to work a variety of wraps for short rows. Then there are patterns you can knit. I was looking for a book that actually described how short rowing can create shapes. The only way to learn that is to actually knit the garments, which is not what I want to do. A bit disappointing.

In the modern learning environment that employs problem-based and integrated curricula for medical and dental students, clinical information is highly valuable. To enhance the value of the flashcards even more, the names of the cells, tissues, structures or organs could be moved from the front to the back of the card. Currently, users do not have to identify what is presented on a card, unless they make a special effort to cover the top of a card. Nice, pretty pictures but Poor Content

Pros:
Great-looking diagrams.
Cards are shiny and sturdy with holes in the upper left corner and come with a ring. They include clinically relevant information.
The cards themselves are aesthetically great.

Cons:
a.) The back of the cards: Very low yield in the sense that there are maybe ~2 concepts per slide and lots of trivial information. I found the back very unhelpful! They DID NOT tell me what I needed to know for histology. If you want good content, I highly recommend Lange's flash cards, which I found out about only after I already bought Netter's.

b.) I had a lab portion on my exams so needed to make sure I could identify structures on both light microscopy and EM. When you look at these flashcards, they have diagrams/illustrations that show idealized views and that's the problem: They're idealized. Disregarding the back of the flash cards which I found completely unhelpful, the idealized views may help you learn the basics. In my case, however, the front of the cards detracted from my ability to learn how to identify structures in real life and on lab exams. I would look at a flashcard and immediately be able to identify the cell type/structure/etc. from the diagram they gave, but it did not help with real life. At least on the cards I saw, even if there was a micrograph/photo on the card, there were diagrams with it, and since your eyes jump immediately go to the idealized diagrams, you can easily identify what you are looking at. If anyone has had a different experience with this, then please comment. I am just sharing mine. The front was too idealized, and the poor content in the back disappointed me highly.

If you want very pretty cards, Netter's is for you. If content's important, then I recommend Lange's. I really wish I could give these cards a 3 because Dr. Netter's artwork (illustrations, not actual photos) are great, but these cards were a waste of my money. Sadly, I could never use them.

Excellent Product.

These laminated cards made a big difference in my histology preparation. They are informative, thorough and the pictures help to get a good grasp of important structures. Since they are portable, they are easy to carry to the library or a coffee shop. I recommend these cards to anyone who wants to enhance their preparations in histology.

Exactly what I needed! While nothing replaces a textbook and talented professor, this is a great way to test your knowledge while out and about or waiting somewhere. Repetition is key for memorization. For my medical school class, the knowledge/explanation on the cards regarding each structure is sufficient.

Very comprehensive with good examples

Conceptually well written book. Examples used are very explanatory and easy to understand. A really handy book when it comes to brushing up our java basics. The JMX, Garbage collection and Security topics are nicely covered. Something we don't pay much attention to but very critical to take care of while developing java applications.

Don't waste your time on this book.

I wanted to refresh my knowledge on Java and learn something new from this book. Although the topics are interesting, the author can't explain most of the concepts well. I bought this book based on other reviews, but I'm quite disappointed with the content.

Not recommended if you are a software developer with more than a few years of experience. It only covers few topics, doesn't contain very technical content, and author's writing style is awful.
