Strange book

This is a sort of interesting, but odd, book. It reads like the person who wrote it was very, very high during the writing of some passages. And the book would be much better with a good editor: there are too many typos and other errors, which are distracting. I was also disappointed when he wrote he thinks eating dairy and meat is okay; doesn't he know what it does to the animals? He's not enlightened in that regard, at all, and this causes his whole premise to fall apart.

Years before pesticides and other pollutants began to endanger species, humans had no trouble finding less sophisticated ways of endangering wildlife. When the twentieth century had barely begun, the passenger pigeons had been slain to the last and the American bison had been hunted to the brink of extinction. Love of and concern for nature called people like Florence Merriam Bailey to action.

Bailey was one of the first to study live birds in their natural environment instead of studying specimens that had been shot and brought into a laboratory. She was the first woman to be an associate member of the American Ornithologists’ Union, and for fifty years, with her husband Vernon Bailey, chief naturalist for the U.S. Biological Survey, she spent summers in the West and Southwest observing birds and making field notes, often from the back of a horse or mule.

Harriet Kofalk has chronicled Florence Merriam Bailey’s life, with Florence’s sixtyyear correspondence with her brother, Hart, as a major source. Numerous excerpts from her ten books and more than one hundred articles are included, all describing joyfully the pleasures of studying live birds.

No Woman Tenderfoot: Florence Merriam Bailey, Pioneer Natura

I highly recommend this book. It is a wonderful read about a highly individualistic, inspiring woman who lived a fascinating life. I found it soothing and stimulating at the same time: it made me get up off my duff and get back out into the big outdoors to take another look at birds and the natural world, and it also gave me hope about what we can do as individuals to learn about and protect the environment. Florence helped start the movement to ban the practice of putting birds and bird feathers on women's hats that nearly wiped out many of our bird species around the turn of the century. Her early life in the woods with minimal schooling allowed her to see the world in a less cynical, socially molded way, making it possible for her to become one of the preeminent naturalists of her day. She traveled all over the West camping with her naturalist husband and observing birds so that she could write some of the first field guides for these areas. As a writer and a scientist, I found the author's descriptions of Florence's scientific technique, which relied on intimate observations of birds' daily lives, fascinating. What a role model! I will read this book again whenever I need to replenish my stores of hope and curiousity.

An engaging biography of an American naturalist

Two traditions exist side by side in the literature of natural history: the scientific tradition, running through Linnaeus and Darwin to the evolutionary biologists of today, and the romantic tradition, passing from Gilbert White to John Burroughs and today's conservation and nature movements. The American naturalist Florence Merriam Bailey (1863-1947), the subject of this biography, was one of those rare individuals who was at home in both traditions. In her early years Bailey was active in the crusade against feather hats, and we see her vigorous work "in the trenches" of Smith College and of Washington society. On the scientific side, as sister to C. Hart Merriam and as wife to Vernon Bailey, pioneer figures in the U.S. Biological Survey, Florence Bailey was an explorer of the American West, and her many expeditions provided material not only for her technical Handbook of Birds of the Western United States (1902) and her Birds of New Mexico (1928), but for dozens of travel and life history accounts in the popular press as well. Ample quotations from Bailey's writings give a vivid picture of the early West, and make it easy to understand why her works were appreciated by both professionals and amateurs.
The weakness of this biography is that, unlike Bailey, its author is at home only in the romantic tradition. We are told on three occasions, for example, that the scientific method of bird study was to "shoot first and ask questions later," a derogatory characterization Bailey would probably not have made inasmuch as her brother and husband were among the greatest collectors of their generation. Florence Bailey comes through as an admirable figure, but the manner in which her story is told will tend to reinforce the prejudices that members of both the scientific and romantic traditions have toward each other today. Simply the best microbiology review book

This book is great. It covers everything you need to know for step 1, while leaving out all you dont' need to know. The questions are probably the best micro vignette questions out there, and helps reinforce what you learned from the book.

This book is much better than micro made ridiculously simple in terms of boards review. Its written in outline format so you can get through it much faster, and it includes an immunology section that has all you need to know for the immunology questions on the step.

The only thing I don't like is the Rapid Review format. At times the outline format should be written in complete sentences (like the high-yield series) to avoid confusing statments/facts. For me, this seemed especially true in the immunology section, which can be confusing if you have a weak immuno background.

Other than that, this is a great review book. The only review book for micro in my opinion.

Good content, but not nearly comprehensive

I am a big fan of the Rapid Review series. The Pathology version by Goljan, as far as I'm concerned, is just as essential as First Aid when it comes to reviewing for class and Step 1. However, Microbiology and Immunology are what I would consider two of the most important topics covered on Step 1 along with pathology, pharmacology, and neuroscience. This book has some good review material in it, but is far from comprehensive. Many topics are discussed extremely briefly or omitted entirely. I could only recommend this book for someone who has Microbiology and Immunology down very well and just needs a super quick refresher. To be honest, First Aid does a better job of covering this material.

*** This review is regarding the content of the book only. I do own this book, but I have not accessed the Student Consult online material. Although I have accessed it for the pathology book in this series. From that material I have deduced that it can't make that big of a difference; but I could very easily be wrong.

Review of Microbiology and Immunology

Perfect for medical microbio class. I used Micro Made easy for class, and after reading this book to review for the boards I would definately recommend it over Micro made easy. The organization is better, it's a shorter text, has an outline format, has excellent tables that while are not as detailed as the micro made easy book are a lot easier to read, and it has everything you need to know for class, which micro made easy does not.

Immuno section is a bit brief but it has all the essentials. I would also recommend reading Immunobiology by Janeway and Medical Microbiology by Murray. Both texts are outstanding and really help you appreciate the subjects.

This Schaum's outline is OK if you have an engineer's interest in the subject, but it does not have the kinds of problems you typically encounter in the pure sciences. It is also not typical of the high quality you find in other Schaum's outlines.
In Lagrangian mechanics, the trajectory of an object is derived by finding the path which minimizes the action, a quantity which is the integral of the Lagrangian over time. The Lagrangian for classical mechanics is taken to be the difference between the kinetic energy and the potential energy.
This considerably simplifies many physical problems. For example, consider a bead on a hoop. If one were to calculate the motion of the bead using Newtonian mechanics, one would have a complicated set of equations which would take into account the forces that the hoop exerts on the bead at each moment. The same problem using Lagrangian mechanics is much simpler. One looks at all the possible motions that the bead could take on the hoop and mathematically finds the one which minimizes the action. There are fewer equations since one is not directly calculating the influence of the hoop on the bead at a given moment.
I don't think that this Schaum' outline does a good job of showing the difference in approach to these kinds of problems. Instead Newtonian and Lagrangian approaches to problems are all jumbled up together. Instead, I recommend that you type "Lagrangian Dynamics" into Google and look at some of the excellent sets of lecture notes available on-line. The online tutorial "A Crash Course in Lagrangian Dynamics" is particularly helpful. At only 18 pages it gets to the heart of the matter and contains some solved numerical examples.
As an aside, if you use Amazon's "search inside" function for this book you will be completely confused. The table of contents and "excerpt" shown are for this book. However, the "Surprise Me" sections are from "Schaum's Outline of Mathematica". If the student of Lagrangian dynamics electronically "thumbs" through this book and wonders what creating 3D graphics with Mathematica has to do with Lagrangian dynamics, the answer is "nothing" - this is an editing error courtesy of Amazon.

The best on Lagrangian Mechanics

If you would like to understand and know who to use Lagrange equation, look no further. This book provides both theory and practical application to Lagrange equation. The material converge is excellent and complete. The book is rich in examples and solved problem. It is a graduate level book but also very accessible to people with good background in Dynamics. I often refer to it when solving dynamic modeling of systems.

The Very Best

This is the best of Schaum's Outlines. Not only is the treatment of variational mechanics complete, with exposition on every major aspect of the derivation and solution dynamical equations, it does so while exceeding all junior-level texts on analytical mechanics. Its treatment of dissipation functions in chapter six, moreover, is better than the available graduate textbooks on the subject. This is the one workbook in the series that you must own for learning and for future reference.
