All around fantastic

:My random thoughts:
When a book starts off with, "Once upon a long long time ago, in a land impossibly far away". It's hard to read that, and not cozy down, knowing you are in for an incredible read.
Everard is one of the strangest, Wittiest, Most unique (Unique doesn't have it's own -est?), and whimsical fantasy novels I've ever read. From Sassy's sweetly sour sarcasm, to the Author's quirky narrating, I was kept in stitches. While reading, it wasn't uncommon for me to snort with laughter, or to huff with Sassy when Everard really was being SUCH a man (if I was a fire breathing reptile, I'd blast smoke through my nostrils too. But I'm not, so I can't).
When my siblings would come up, and ask what I was reading, the best explanation my preoccupied brain could think to say, was, "An awkward prince". Which isn't very bright, but when your mind is in a land impossibly far away, you can say such things like that.
Everard is, indeed, an awkward Prince. He might not be tripping all over his feet, and he might not be spilling mugs each time he turns around, he bumbles all the same. However, while he might be a plain out awkward goose in the beginning, at the end, he is more, adorably awkward. Oh, yeah, without a doubt, Everard turns out simply adorable.

Characters:
Everard was interesting. Rarely in the literary world do you meet a bloke like him. I admired him for his strong sense of duty, it was refreshing, but overwhelming too. At some points, I'll admit, I just wondered why he even tried, but, in the end, everything had turned out for the best. He had learned lessons, and faced his fears. Proved himself, if you will.
Roana I think is a wonderful example for girls and woman of all ages. The way she calmly faced the future, how she tried her best to please everyone, and dealt sweetly with her Father. Yet, wasn't too timid to stand against him when he did wrongs, and was willing to not accept the Prince's offer. That takes some amazing bravery people, to say "No" to a Prince's offer of marriage.

Plot:
The plot was...quick, but also slow at times. There were instances when I just wanted Everard's tasks to end, it seemed a bit monotonous while he was searching for the 'Giant'. But after Bernar's plot was uncovered, it picked back up again.

Writing Style:
I adore Mrs. Havig's writing style, but this book's in particular, is one of my favorites. It was quirky, and hilarious. Each time the Narrator would break off to explain things, I had to smile at the witty way those normal (or not so normal) things were explained.

Ending:
The ending summed things up nicely. It finished well. From Everard becoming 100% adorable and loosing some of that stifling shyness of his, Roana living pretty much happily ever after (her father was convicted of treason, we can't say her life was always happy. Plus, that's a sugary Disney lie. I'm sure even Cinderella had to deal with her Step Mother and sisters again) and even a happy ending for Gilander.

World Building:
The world building demands a "Bravo Brava". World building is certainly a fine point for Mrs. Havig.

Language: None.

Drugs and Drink: Ale and mead was drunk, but it's the Middle Ages. Everyone drank the stuff. There was no drunks, however. So, you can rest easy on that.

Romance and sexual content:
The fact that the hero and heroine of 'Everard' didn't meet, fall head over heels in love, and decide to marry on the spot is a wonderful sight. I'm sure you can understand when I say that the Disney style romance can get annoying. It was a fantasy romance, without any romance. It wasn't about the head over heels love, but the slow and steady love that endures.

Violence:
Violence? Everard goes to slay a dragon, a giant, gets attacked twice (the first time only resulting in a minor head injury, and the second leaving Everard more then half dead) and then Everard had to duel an untrustworthy, to say the least, Knight. Which resulted in having to kill him. But it was never gory. And, I liked how Everard was sensitive enough to One) Make sure Roana didn't see Martel be killed, and Two) he mourned Martel's death. How rare is that? Very rare. But, I've over used the word in this post, refreshing.

Ratings
I loved this read. It was refreshing, fun, and just all around clean. It was simple enough that even a 5 year old would like to hear it read out loud, but entertaining enough to keep this 16 year old engrossed. Also, so few fantasies include Christ. From 'Great Spirits' to Aslan, there is normally a look alike, but never the true thing. 'Everard' did. And I loved it. I never realized how more a Fantasy can be when you include God.

Without a shadow of a doubt, or a shadow of decision, or a shadow of remorse, or a shadow of anything, I give this book a whole, hearty, and applauded 5 star!

Well written and humorous.

Everard is about Prince Everard, who has returned from a 1,000 year war. On the way to the castle, he meets a girl named Roana and he decides to marry her. Standing in his way is her father, who is angry about his son dying in the war. Her father makes the prince go on ridiculous quests to prove himself to the father. This is a fun and humorous book. I would recommend this book to other young readers as well as adults.

While you do not have to read Princess Paisley in order to enjoy this book, I would recommend that you read that book also. There are a few crossover parts that make this book more enjoyable having read Princess Paisley.

An Excellent Fairy Tale Twist

I don't know why I bother myself with worrying about it, but somehow, every time I start a Chautona Havig story, I wonder how it will be as good as the last one I read. Really, you'd think I'd get it in my thick skull that there is no Chautona Havig book that I won't love! For real!
To prove this point, I'll just say Everard is one of my absolute favorites (but truly, aren't they all?!). I love his character, I love Roana, I love Sevrin, I love Giliander, I love Alydia (as an aside, I think all the names are wonderful too!), I even love Sassy. :)
The way Chautona narrates the story is so much fun (as it was with Princess Paisley) and I love how faith is incorporated, and that there are lessons anyone, not just kids, can learn through reading it.
I can't say enough good things about this book. Just buy it already, seriously - you won't regret it.

In 1973, psychologist Ann Streissguth was shocked by the lack of scientific documentation on the impact of alcohol on the unborn child. She sought to fill that void by dedicating her professional career to the study of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol effects (FAE). In this compassionate volume, Dr. Streissguth draws on her life's work, writing with wisdom and authority on essential issues surrounding these alcohol-related problems. Using compelling case studies, photos, illustrations, and validated empirical research, the author highlights the cultural, racial, and economic diversity of FAS. A completely preventable disability, FAS still changes the life course of thousands of babies each year. This book will help physicians, psychologists, social workers, educators, advocates, and families of children and adults with FAS work toward an educated community, a supportive network of legislation and programs, and better futures for people living and growing with FAS.

About the Author

Ann Streissguth, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She received her master;s degree in child development from the University of California at Berkeley and her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of Washington. Dr. Streissguth is a licensed clinical psychologist with a specialty in behavioral teratology. She has 25 years of experience working with individuals with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol effects (FAE), as well as with their families and communities. Researchers at the University of Washington Fetal Alcohol and Drug Unit, which Dr. Streissguth directs, have investigated many types of prenatal influences on later development in offspring, including alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, aspirin, and acetaminophen. Prior to her position at the Fetal Alcohol and Drug Unit, Dr. Streissguth studied the impact of poverty, preschool experience, caregiving experiences, and the rubella virus on child development. In all, she has published more than 150 scientific papers, two books, and a slide-teaching curriculum on alcohol and pregnancy. Dr. Streissguth and her colleagues have been actively involved in research on preventing FAS/FAE since these conditions were identified. In 1978, she collaborated with Dr. Ruth Little in a 3-year project (The Pregnancy and Health Program) funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) to develop methods to intervene in female alcohol abuse during pregnancy and to prevent FAS/FAE. More recently, Dr. Streissguth and colleagues developed and evaluated the impact of a model advocacy program (Seattle Birth to 3) for helping high-risk women who are abusing alcohol and drugs during pregnancy and not receiving prenatal care. At the conclusion of the 5-year research program funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), a local philanthropist provided funding to continue the program; then the governor of Washington State provided funds to develop a second site in another city. As of 1997, the Washington State legislature has funded the two sites for the biennium. Dr. Streissguth has been principal investigator of the Pregnancy and Health Study, a longitudinal prospective study of the relationship between early experiences and child development, funded by NIAAA since 1974. She has completed a major research project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on secondary disabilities in individuals with FAS/FAE and associated risk and protective factors, which culminated in an international conference in Seattle in September 1996. Since 1983, Dr. Streissguth has worked with Native American communities and the Indian Health Service to provide FAS training workshops, screening clinics, research findings, and direct consultations to Native Americans and Alaskan Natives. With her colleagues, she has also initiated a 5-year study of magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychological functioning in people with FAS/FAE, funded by NIAAA. Along with Dr. Paul Lemoine of France, Dr. Streissguth was co-recipient of the 1985 International Jellinek Memorial Award for Advancement of the Field of Alcohol Studies. In 1987, along with Dr. Ruth Little, she received the annual award for outstanding contribution from the American Medical Society on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies. In 1992, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence presented the Silver Key Award to Dr. Streissguth on behalf of her outstanding contribution and research on FAS/FAE. In 1997, she received the Outstanding Public Service Award from the University of Washington for her efforts to help individuals with FAS/FAE and their families.

Liz Steel is an artist, teacher, illustrator and architect based in Sydney, Australia. She has 20 years' experience working on residential and commercial projects, specializing in media. She is a fast but accurate sketch artist with a passion for architecture of any era but especially Baroque buildings. She has combined her architecture training with many years of urban sketching around the world to develop specific strategies for drawing buildings. Liz teaches sketching courses online at sketchingnow.com and hosts workshops around Australia, where she is the Australia coordinator for the global online community, Urban Sketchers. You should buy this book.

This small book is jam-packed with useful information. Main points and tips are presented as bullet points with lots of accompanying illustrations. Liz Steel is one of the gurus of the Urban Sketching movement and her book is definitely worth buying. Excellent value. I have taken 2 of her online courses and this book still manages to convey even more information. The 5 Minute part of the title should be more prominent - this is not about detailed architectural drawings. Liz really encourages fast and accurate sketching and provides the tips to get better at doing so.

In her earlier The Deming Management Method (Putnam, 1986), Walton examined the principles of W. Edwards Deming that had revitalized Japanese industry. Now, she looks at the Deming method as applied at Florida Power & Light, Hospital Corporation of America, Tri-Cities Tennessee, Bridgestone (USA), Globe Metallurgical, and the U.S. Navy. Similar to Andrea Gabor's The Man Who Discovered Quality ( LJ 9/15/90), Walton's book discusses fewer cases in greater depth. Either book would be a good addition to business collections. Like The Deming Management Method, Aguayo's book covers Deming's 14 points of management but contains more analysis of how those ideas can be put to use. Both present Deming's theories clearly, but if Walton's book is not already owned, Aguayo's would be the best choice. A comprehensive business collection may want all four books, but small collections can limit themselves to one each on the practical and theoretical approaches to Deming's method.
