the CSI effect whereby dilletantes believe themselves to be Crime
Scene Investigators and Forensic Scientists because they will themselves
to be and they see a commercial and salutory opening to advance themselves in a heretofore uncluttered niche (thus the basis for why
forensic science specialties and subspecialties have clamped down
on 'amateurism' and instituted strcter testing and licensing requirements for forensic practices in crime labs, police departments
and medical examiner's offices).

This book, like Perlmutter's earlier crude amateurish treatise on
ritualistic murders (why on Earth would CRC agree to publish such
rubbish ?), demonstrates a facile, dilletantish, non-scientific
and less-than-cosmopolitan understanding of ritualized criminal
activity, whether psycopathic, religious-based, geopolitical or
merely opportunistic. This book might be worthwhile (along with
her earlier publication) as a textbook for an elective or non-majors
humanities department course in the art or symbolism (phenology or
semiotics) of criminal activity, but it falsely purports to have any use
as a forensic or criminological tool in the understanding of
ritualized behavior that may lead to murder of any scale. You
are far better off reading the published work and books by
forensic psychologist Eric Hickey, or the legion of trained
FBI, state crime lab and other specialized forensic scientists
and psychologists who have ACTUAL scientific grounding in the
area of ritualized criminal behavior.

Honest and entertaining

I was never in any part of the military but reading Mark Time's account of his transition from schoolboy to Royal Marine was very entertaining. The author was able to make me change from laughing hysterically one minute describing his methods of preparing for the training to feeling quite sombre the next when describing his home life.

What I really love about this book... is it's honesty! Mark Time admits there were times where he did not want to go on with the training, taking failure badly, but pulling himself together to get through the challenges of a brutal training regime , bearing in mind he was only 16 years of age. I love the fact that this book is NOT a 'blood and guts', testosterone fuelled story, with tales of heroism. I like the way it was written, making me feel that a 16 year old recruit was telling me how he saw things. It is basically an honest account of how hard it is to join one of toughest parts of Britain's military.

I could not put this book down and completed it in one sitting. I'm impatient to read the next book!

Just Brilliant

First of all, don't be fooled into thinking that this is a book that only Royal marines or ex servicemen can relate to. This is about a journey about a young lad who wants a better life for himself. The author gives a riveting and gritty account of his childhood,, coming from a broken home where his Grandparents raised him. The story goes from his account of growing up in a mining town in Yorkshire to achieving his dream and becoming a Royal Marine Commando.

This book has more emotion than Forest gump and will have you crying with tears of laughter and sadness. His analogies on life has more dry wit than the bottom of a Budgie cage and i defy anyone who reads this book not to be pleasantly surprised and wanting more!
For a first attempt, I think Mark Time may just about to be embarking on a new Career. Good effort Royal!

Hilarious and poignant !!

I have no experience of military life whatsoever but as a lover of biographies I could not put this book down. Mark accurately illustrates life in 70/80s working class England in a way that resonated and made me laughter out loud. At times the stories sent a shiver down my spine, made me feel like a lazy arse,made me sad, made me angry and made me smile. In someways this book has confirmed my stereotypical somewhat left-wing views about the military but mostly it has challenged my assumptions about people within the services. I look forward to reading how the young Mark fares in the next instalment.... Actually I can't wait!!!
