A glorious fantasy/steampunk Beauty and the Beast tale!

As the sequel to BROKEN GLASS (found in the FIVE GLASS SLIPPERS anthology), I was so excited to read CORRODED THORNS to experience the rest of Darcy's story! And boy does it ever not disappoint!

I loved this book so much that I read it twice in one week. I have an occasional urge to do that with other books, but almost never follow through. But this time I just couldn't help myself! Fortunately it's a novella so I was able to read it in a sitting, and it's one of those perfect novellas that feels exactly the right size.

As a Beauty and the Beast retelling, I so enjoyed watching the plot unfold and picking out the similarities and twists. It's a favorite fairytale of mine, particularly that it shows how even really horrid characters can find redemption. I LOVE fairytale retellings, and this has to be one of my favorite versions of Beauty and the Beast! I simply adored it.

The plot behind the normal Beauty and the Beast part of the story was so awesome -- I loved that there was so much more going on under the surface than meets the eye and it TOTALLY made sense for the story; plus, fascinating fairy godmother politics! Isn't that just cool? It was all so interesting to read about!

It was a gorgeous world, the settings felt so alive and real and everything was extremely vivid in my mind, despite the relative shortness of the tale. I really felt like I was in that old dark castle on the lake! The touch of steampunkness was SO cool and original (steampunk Beauty and the Beast? Yes please!), and I don't usually notice this but I LOVED the magic in this story! It was just... I can't describe it but it was perfect and seamless and interesting. Just... really well done.

In the interests of being fair and looking at both sides... Complaints? Umm, it took me a moment to think of any. There's hardly anything wrong with this book! I did sometimes have a hard time visualizing exactly what the Beast looked like. I wished there had been a little more description on that, since my mental image kept changing. That being said, it was still an extremely awesome idea the way he was done!

At first as I started out, I was slightly disappointed that it didn't feel just like the first one, BROKEN GLASS, which was hilarious and mad-dash and there were so many characters running around making a mess and being fabulous. But that's only a partial complaint, because I quickly grew to love CORRODED THORNS just as much, despite its different feeling, and perhaps more because this one was much more straightforward of a plot, mostly following the one storyline, so I ended up more invested and just loved watching Darcy and Madeline's story unfolding!

So don't expect CORRODED THORNS to have exactly the same feel as BROKEN GLASS. This one is a little less whimsical and has a darker, more serious and epic feel to it (but there are still fabulous characters and some hilarious parts, never fear!). But I ended up loving that about it. They're just different stories but you can still feel that they're connected as well.

And now we get to the best part. The characters! I LOVED THEM.

-Madeline is such a sweet, insecure, mousey thing and I found myself really really liking her. She's so used to being a failure and yet she KEEPS TRYING and I love that about her. I can't even quite describe it but... Madeline's just so likeable. (Also tea and cucumber sandwiches.)
-Young Niles was an unexpected but splendid (and rather important) addition, the one servant who stayed behind for the Beast. Gaahh, I just adored him! He was such an original, cheerful, stubborn, friendly fellow and was just fabulous! Yes, yes and yes. His role in the story really surprised me and I thought it was so cool!
-Darcy... Ah, Darcy. What does one even say about him? DARCY. That is all. Despite his somewhat beastly tendencies, you still love him and it's just incredible watching his story-arc leading from BROKEN GLASS and progressing through this one. It was amazing to read about, quite believable, awesome, and extremely well done. DARCY IS MY FAVORITE. I just loved loved loved reading this story about him! Especially his snark. So much fun.

Darcy, Niles, and Madeline make for a splendid main cast. Their interactions are just the best! The humor, the gems of hilarious lines... I loved it all! The other characters were interesting as well. Basically look forward to a great cast of characters in this book.

The ending. THE ENDING! There was one of those moments near the end where I suddenly stopped reading and went oh no -- it's about to be over -- I don't want it to END!! But then it stayed just the right extra amount of time to wrap up the things I wanted addressed and it felt... I don't know... like a reward and it was just PERFECT! AAAHH. I loved it so much! Also, the glimpse of some characters from the first at the end totally made the book!! It made me so very very happy!

And not to give anything away, but this book contains my favorite proposal scene EVER. Yes, it was that good.

LOWERY STOKES SIMS is the Charles Bronfman International Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York. Former President of The Studio Museum in Harlem and a specialist in modern and contemporary art, she is known for her expertise in the work of African, Latino, Native, and Asian American artists.

SUZANNE RAMLJAK, a writer, art historian, and curator, is currently editor of Metalsmith magazine. She was formerly curator of exhibitions at the American Federation of Arts. Needs Updating

This is an informative book, but looking at the copyright date of 1984 and the introductory note by Anne McCaffrey dated 1984 you have to realize that anything in the books after Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern (published in 1983) will not be on the maps.

I looked at the map of the area around Ruatha Hold and did not see the ford which the party that populated the hold had to cross in order to get there from Fort Hold and which Ruatha Hold was named for (Rua Atha meaning Red's Ford after Red Hanrahan, a character in Chronicles of Pern: First Fall(1993) and one of the original colonists.)

Get the book if you want to see some of the earliest references of places on Pern, but do not expect all of the places mentioned in all of the books to be shown. A bit of a let down but to be expected considering the year it was published.

Excellent supplemental

Fonstad created this as a labor of love, and is an excellent supplement to the books themselves for anyone who has wanted to see the full extent of the locations in them. The drawings are as accurate as they could be thanks to great consultation with the Dragonmistress herself, Anne McCaffrey, who gave her blessing for the book.

I enjoyed the details outlined in this book. It helps to visualize places and the Holds and Weyrs when reading the Pern series. It certainly brings to life this wonderful planet created by Anne McCaffrey. I would recommend this to anyone who loves the Pern series as well as wanting more details about the places within it.

this was pretty good

Told me something I've never known and I incorporated it into my yoga with different moves. This actually soothed a muscle I overstretched that's been sore for a couple of months. So yeah, i really liked this. NOTE:. This is for side splits..... I was born with a type of mermaid syndrome and I wore braces as a child to straighten my legs. The braces tightened my hip bones. For a lifetime I have been trying to be more flexible but to no avail. This helped me the very first time and no soreness. I just tried it and only once but I used it for different moves and I feel better. Will continue because ten percent of something is better than a hundred percent of nothing.

If you follow this to the letter you will be in a perfect split in no time. At first, I was very upset because it is short. Nevertheless it does work! Great job!

The method described requires no special tools or assistance, and the individual, working alone, should be able to perform splits in about two weeks. The book is structured and consists of very short chapters that build step-by-step from basics to advanced topics. Each chapter covers a related topic, defines terminology, includes a photo illustrating the body position, and narrative explanation of how the task is accomplished in step-by-step fashion, how to assess performance, keeping records, with tips and reminders. Chapter topics are basics, isometrics, testing your potential, warm-ups, stretches, side splits, contract and relax training, practice, and leg stretches. Pretty straightforward stuff, well organized and written.

Couldn't wait for this story and it didn't disappoint!

I have been waiting for Walk on the Wild Side by Jami Alden since the first book in this series came out. Molly and Brady have had chemistry from day one and I couldn't wait to read the story where they finally got their happily ever after. Molly starts off the story engaged to another man, but when she goes to surprise him by making him dinner at his place, she meets his new wife. Brady hated Molly's fiancee, so he's glad when she becomes single and shocked when she approaches him to have sex. Well, Brady goes along with it while angling for something deeper. Both Molly and Brady have issues and those issues are what come into play and cause trouble for them throughout the story. This story was well written and flowed nicely. There were a couple of typos, but nothing that couldn't be easily overlooked. I'm happy that Molly and Brady finally got their HEA and recommend this book. I give this story 4.5 stars and will definitely be rereading this story again as well as keeping books by Jami Alden on my auto-buy list.

Oh boy....this has to be my favourite one of all. The chemistry between Molly Tanner and Brady McManus is hot, hot, hot. I love the banter between them and know they both have issues with trust and family problems but know they can hopefully work things out. What started as a hot sexy, mind blowing fling turned into so much more. Loved it all

Jami Alden's writing and books get better over time. She has become an auto buy for me. Molly and Brady are relateable characters. The only thing is I wish Molly had shared the thing with her father with her mother and sister.

A Brilliant and Pure Scintillating Story

If you have not read this book, then I'm begging you....yes, begging you....to add it to your bookshelf. Then, bump it up to the top of that to-be-read shelf that accumulates so much dust. Dust if off, pick it up, and lose yourself in this alluring story! You won't regret it!

Tailspin! That's exactly what I found myself in from the first sentence, not the first page, the very first sentence in this book! Wendi Cassel has delivered a brilliant tale of desire, betrayal, healing, and commitment to the pages, unlike any other I've read. There are so many times while reading this book that I found myself holding my breath one minute and squeeing with delight the next.

Hailey is a character with whom I can easily connect and identify. She has struggled with the pain of loss, fought for her place in this unfair universe which is life, and she constantly analyzes each situation with what ifs. We've all had them, I'm sure. What if I had done this differently? What if this happens? This is simply Hailey, and she relies on her head instead of her heart. But, when she meets Andrew, everything changes. Hailey has never needed anybody for anything, but she was surprised to discover she needed Andrew.

Andrew Grayson is the debonaire aristocrat who is now my new book boyfriend (we all know I love a British hero). He reminds me of so many of my book boyfriends in the past, yet he isn't like those boyfriends. He is able to stand alone in this category of highness I tend to place my literary heroes. You will know the ones I'm talking about: Christian, Gabriel, Edward, Gideon, and Bones. Andrew has the world at his feet, yet he is caught in a web of lies, deceit, and betrayal at the hands of his own family. Andrew also suffers from the disease of What ifs, but Andrew's what ifs were so special, my cheeks hurt from smiling so much.

This is not a love at first sight story, although there is an attraction or fascination at first sight. The pacing of the romance that blossoms between Andrew and Hailey is perfectly paced. But, this story isn't just about a romance between Andrew and Hailey. It is so much more! There are betrayals on so many levels. Family secrets that have been hidden for years are uncovered....so many family secrets! Torment of one family became commonplace. Yet, there is healing in so many different ways. The chapter headings alone seem to tell a story of their own, and they are so fitting.

Okay, so what did this book do for me? It made me cry...and squee...and swoon...and scream OMG along with a few expletives. My heart was torn out at one point, but stitched together and put back in my body the next moment. My breath was taken away, but I was recusitated only to be transformed. Have you ever experienced that feeling that something really bad is coming, but you don't know what it is?

About the Author

Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher and author. Born into a line of Protestant churchman, Nietzsche studied Classical literature and language before becoming a professor at the University of Basel in Switzerland. He became a philosopher after reading Schopenhauer, who suggested that God does not exist, and that life is filled with pain and suffering. Nietzsche s first work of prominence was The Birth of Tragedy in 1872, which contained new theories regarding the origins of classical Greek culture. From 1883 to 1885 Nietzsche composed his most famous work, Thus Spake Zarathustra, in which he famously proclaimed that God is dead. He went on to release several more notable works including Beyond Good and Evil and The Genealogy of Morals, both of which dealt with the origins of moral values. Nietzsche suffered a nervous breakdown in 1889 and passed away in 1900, but not before giving us his most famous quote, From life's school of war: what does not kill me makes me stronger.

Great Idea! Bad Translation.

Having the the German side by side with the English is a great idea and I hope this publisher continues doing this with other works. That said, the English translation here is quite dreadful and close to useless. In fact, it's so bad, it's actually worse than useless. I found it so distracting that I had to give up on it altogether. You'll want Kaufmann or Hollingdale close by even if like me you have some modest access to the German.

This was terrific. Hope this company comes out with more German works. This is the way a bilingual work should be presented. Bravo.

Good for learning German and changing life philosophies

Due to it's bilingual composition which is well presented, the book is good for learning German. The only disadvantage is that it is written in somewhat archaic language if I understand well. And, of course, the book is famous for its radical philosophic views.
