Great insight into new characters.

Three shorts stories that give us a look at the lives of the characters just before the film. The first is Finn's story. A bit basic mostly telling about his training but shows some seeds as to why he defects later on. Rey's story is fun but adds little information about her mysterious past. It mostly shows what her daily life on Jakku has been like all these years. I did enjoy that Jakku feels more like a Mad Max survival planet in this story than just another desert planet like in the movie.

By far the best story here though is Poe's. If you read the Shattered Empire comic, this is pretty much a direct sequel. It briefly mentions the fates of Shara Bey and Kes Dameron, his parents. It also gives greater insight into what the new republic and the resistance is all about. The story covers corruption in the senate and why General Organa felt the need to create a resistance separate from the republic navy. Poe enjoys a cool covert mission that ultimately leads directly into the beginning of The Force Awakens. Poe's tale is worth the purchase of this book alone. Finn and Rey's stories are just bonuses.

Like a nice red wine to go with a good steak

Bought this the day after I saw the movie (I hadn't even heard of this book).

If you haven't seen the movie this is a great book to get you excited about the movie (if you aren't already excited) and if you have seen the movie this is a great book to find out a little more about Finn, Rey & Poe.

To be honest this book won't spoil any plots for you if you haven't seen the movie and it won't reveal much of anything if you have seen the movie. The book is very well written and a very easy read. It does provide you an insight on these three characters since the book takes place just before the movie starts. The most revealing information is on Poe but that is a plus since there seems to be so little about Poe in the movie.

A great addition to the movie

Short but very informative, this book is a prequel to The Force Awakens, giving us three short stories that add to the movie without giving away any spoilers.

I really enjoyed Finn's story the most, because it explains aspects of his training and your can see the struggle he's going through... The struggle that ultimately leads to his defection.

Rey's story is a little less intense but gives us more information on her day-to-day life on Jakku, as well as explaining how she got some of her skills.

Poe's story gives us more information about the Resistance and the corruption within the Republic. His story ends at just the right point, giving us the opening to the movie.

Overall, this is a wonderful collection that answers several questions that I had from the movie, as well as providing motivation and background for several characters.

Not worth your time or money

Not worth buying. When you buy a book titled "Constructing Kitchen Cabinets" with an exploded view of a cabinet on the cover, you expect to learn how to construct cabinets. Instead this book is a hodge podge of kitchen layout, design, construction and installation, without ever providing sufficent depth to accomplish any one of the tasks. I would have hoped to find at least a few dimensioned drawings of a cabinet carcass, but alas there were none. There were 3 times more pages on applying Formica then how do design the cabinet itself. I will be returning this book, never to buy one from the series again.

Gaps include items like; Plans without dimensions for the materials (what do you use for the back, sides, bottoms). No recommendations on how deep the dadoes should be. No discussions on shelves and the permissible span lengths or stiffening required. Glossing over the use of pocket screws and excessive focus on dowels. Face frames were shown without ever discussing the material sizes (how wide the rails and stiles should be). The only way shown or mentioned to attach face frames to the cabinets is with a nail gun, no discussion of pocket screws or briskets.

If you want something to base your cabinet carcass construction on, this book is not for you.

Very well organized book

The book is very well organized and is written in a simple language. The instructions are easy to understand. The book does not provide a cut list and is not comprehensive, so it might be oriented toward a woodworker with some experience. I own quite a few books on cabinet making and this book is one of my favorites. It is not as comprehensive as 'The Complete Kitchen Cabinetmaker' by Lange and I like it for that. If you need a quick reference without an overwhelming text and pictures than this is a book for you.

Warning: Do not expect to learn cabinet making from this book. Buy Lange book for this purpose.

A step down from the 1st edition...

I've used this textbook in both the first and second edition, but have decided that I won't use it again.

I generally liked the first edition, but this second edition was inferior. First, the CD-ROM with the primary readings has been made more difficult to use. Many of the entries no longer open a text box on the screen but take you to a website with numerous options, making the precise reading assignments difficult to find unless you want to assign the whole text of something really long. Besides, if all these primary sources are already on the internet, why should we all pay extra to buy the CD-ROM?

Second, the book is organized in a confusing way. As someone who likes to teach the development of Western philosophy from Ancient Greece until today, there was no straightforward way to teach this. You have to jump around topic to topic. (OK, I acknowledge that some people like the topical approach so maybe this is just a personal perference)

Third, it is pretty obvious from reading the book which views the author prefers. I consider this to be inappropriate in an intro level book.

So, while there are some good things about the book such as its attempted breadth, I'll be using something else next time.

A Fun Read...

The 2nd Edition is riddled with typos, about one every two pages. This is annoying because they tend to appear right in a sentence where the author is driving home a point or asking a critical question.

Aside from that, it's a fun read, but some sections are far beyond the reading comprehension of beginning college students. At times, the author makes better sense of a long passage with his remarks and synthesis, while the context of the excerpts sometimes just do not come together.

I have to commend the author for picking some "choice" images for the margins to keep a sleepy reader alert. These include: the gradation of skin color changes over Michael Jackson's career span, death photos of Malcolm X, people picking through garbage, planes flying into the twin towers, etc.. I get the sense that the author is a cynical yet intelligent man, which is why the book works for me regardless of typos and small context issues.

Decent but not a great read

I read this for enjoyment, not for a class. I found the topics suited to an entry-level philosophy student, but for this purpose it does a good job of explaining the central viewpoints from which philosophers can approach a subject.

That said, these types of entry-level books are better when they include a chronological approach to philosophy. I saw jumps between topics and even within topics which seemed to ignore hundreds of years of thinking and debate.

As a cursory overview, this book delivers. As a middle-level book, the writing begins to falter. Seasoned philosophers will probably want to stay away from this one.

SUPERB BOOK ! BUY IT !

This book is an excellent resource for researchers and scientists in applied electromagnetics. Electromagnetic wave propagation and analysis in complex media was never treated with the practical approach that is introduced in this book before. I am teaching electromagnetics course and I am using this book as the most important reference for my students. There are many practical applications and design examples to understand and apply theory. The only two words that I can say for this book are : BUY IT !

This book has lot of errors and it is highly overpriced for such a small book (basically the authors PhD thesis). Do not buy.

Stasiowski"s Winning Proposals

Stasiowski's 'Architect's Essentials of Winning Proposals' has some useful pieces of advice for readers who already know how to write an architectural proposal, but the text is not helpful for those who lack such knowledge. The main problem is lack of examples. He does present a few pertinent examples - the two cover letters (one good, one bad)- that illustrate the points he is making about cover letter. But these examples are the exception. True, the detailed proposals which are his subject are likely to be quite long and that may prohibit the inclusion of full samples of a resume - one of the elements of a proposal. But surely he could have given partial examples longer that a couple of lines. From a whole chapter on resumes he allocates about 10 lines of example sentences.

Thus the book is somewhat of a disappointment for someone coming to the subject for the first time. It is unfortunate because the literature offering advice on the topic is very sparse indeed.

Great quick primer

Fred clearly knows what he is doing when he goes to a horse race. If you don't know anything about horse betting this is a great book to help you get started. Since getting started I've been betting on horses for about 5 weeks and couldn't be happier with my results. I totally recommend this book to anyone, whether you want to start betting seriously or even just want to know what the hell is going on at the tracks.

This book will really get you excited about horse racing. I'd been a few times before, and tried to learn a little prior to reading. Now I go and feel like I have some actual strategies that work. As with anything, you get what you put into it, but at least now I can get excited about racing and usually break even and have a cheap evening of entertainment at the track.
