In 1998, Los Angeles urologist Dr. Eric Robbins started using pranic healing in his practice when he decided to try it on a patient who was not responding to standard medicine. Dr. Robbins had seen this patient's name on the roster of the surgical ward for a long time. As frequently happens with complex cases, once things start going really wrong with the body, they seem to escalate. The patient developed multiple intracultaneous fistulae, yeast sepsis, and a pulmonary embolism. He wasn't expected to live. "I went into the guy's room and I said, 'Look, we're doing everything we can for you within the realm of standard medicine. Can I try some of this weird energy stuff on you?'" Dr. Robbins began applying pranic healing daily. Within two days, his fever and nausea disappered. Within one week his pulse rate decreased and he eventually got strong enough to tolerate a final surgery to repair his fistulae and went on to make a full recovery.

Dr. Benny Atnil is another physician who uses pranic healing in his practice. One of his success stories is of healing a 31-year-old man of Diabetes Mellitus. After intensive treatment with pranic healing three times a week, the patient's blood glucose went from 175 to 108. The patient was able to gradually reduce and then stop taking his medication. His last tests showed him free from Diabetes Mellitus.

INTRODUCTION

This book is predominantly based on the instructions given to the author by my teacher, Mei Ling. Other teachers also provided useful information. Teacher Mei Ling is one of the mentors of the author in his esoteric studies. Many clairvoyant investigations and experiments were done. It is also based on the author's and his students' experiments and experiences. Some of the concepts and techniques are "new" and different from other books on color healing. Instructions on the art of instantaneous healing of fresh wounds are given in a later chapter.

Many of the advanced techniques should be practiced by experienced pranic healers, and not by beginners. Improper understanding of the principles and instructions, and improper application of the advanced healing techniques may result in adverse effects on the patients. READ THROUGH THIS BOOK TWICE BEFORE APPLYING ANY OF THE ADVANCED TECHNIQUES.

Advanced pranic healing uses color pranas and chakral techniques to produce very rapid healing and to cure difficult ailments.

Air prana, solar prana, and ground prana are made of "white" or general prana. Air and ground pranas are called vitality globules in esoteric parlance because, when they are seen clairvoyantly or by a person with slightly more sensitive eyes, they appear as small spheres or globules of light. Vitality globules come in different sizes. Some contain more units of "white" prana and some contain less.

Ground vitality globules interpenetrate the ground and extend several inches away from it. They are more dense or more closely-packed and usually bigger than air vitality globules. Some of the bigger air vitality globules can be easily seen by just staring at the sky for a few minutes especially just before sunset. You do not need to be a clairvoyant to be able to see them. Many people are able to see them in a few sessions. With more practice, you will also be able to see ground vitality globules just a few inches away from the ground.

COLOR PRANAS

Vitality globules (conglomerations of units of white prana) are absorbed by the chakras where they are digested and broken down into their components. When white prana is digested, it produces six types of color pranas corresponding to the colors of the rainbow. A substantial amount of air prana is absorbed directly by the front and back spleen chakra. Air prana is broken down to different color pranas and distributed to the other chakras. Ground prana is absorbed through the sole chakras then goes to the basic chakra. A portion of the ground prana is directed upward to the spine and other chakras while a larger portion is directed to the perineum minor chakra, to the navel chakra, then to the spleen chakra where it is broken down and distributed to the other chakras. All these take place automatically, or at the subconscious level.

"White" prana is composed of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet pranas.

HOW TO USE COLOR PRANA

Color prana is more specialized and more potent than white prana. Using color prana instead of white prana is just like approaching a specialist instead of a general practitioner. When using color prana, avoid projecting dark color prana since it may have adverse effects. In some cases, it may have a reverse reaction. For example, light red prana has a strengthening effect, but dark red prana has an overwhelming effect and will weaken the treated part. When projecting color prana, it is safer and more effective to use a light or pastel color.

The potency of a light color prana can be further diluted by combining it with white prana. For example, one can visualize the projected prana as luminous white at the core with light red at the periphery to strengthen an organ. It is better and safer to combine a color prana of lighter shade with white prana. White prana is the harmonizing prana. It is harmonizing in the sense that it provides the other color pranas required in healing and it redistributes excess color pranas from the treated area to other parts of the body. In general, better, faster, and safer results are obtained by combining white prana (about 70%) with light color prana (about 30%) than just light color prana since white prana provides the other color pranas required in healing. On rare occasions, if necessary, I use light color prana for more potent effects.

You may visualize the projected prana as: (1) luminous white at the core with the color prana at the periphery; (2) color prana at the core and the white prana at the periphery; or (3) light color prana thoroughly mixed with white prana. Visualize luminous white light (white prana) being projected. Then add a light tinge of the color prana, which results in a very light pastel color. Method 1 and method 2 are the same because it has been clairvoyantly observed that these two patterns change alternately, continuously, and rapidly from one pattern to the other. Method 3 produces more subtle pranic energy and is quite safe in general.

When energizing with color pranas, it is safer to flick the hand a few times before energizing with another color prana.

I haven't yet taken the Advanced Pranic Healing Class, but after reading the book, I've started working with some of the protocols and as long as I don't do anything too far out, I definitely feel safe using these. Can't wait to take the class.

Puzzles aren't well written, will occupy your time, though

I was first introduced to grid-logic puzzles through the Puzzle Society's Pocket Posh series. The questions were challenging, every clue had one or two facts contained in them, with some intuitive guesses necessary to solve the puzzle. This book however seems like it is written for those who want to solve the puzzle quickly rather than methodically. Some of the facts given are provided twice through the process, which makes you wonder why they told you the same thing twice. The authors also have not taken the time to tell you a story, instead they take three disparate facts, and that you have to solve. For example, name, type of camera owned & favorite candy bar. What do those have in common? The authors are also big on "of the five choices, one is this, another is that, etc." I find this kind of writing lazy in a logic puzzle. When I work logic puzzles, I want to feel like Poirot solving a mystery through the process of elimination, not a waitress trying to serve a drink order.

However, if you are looking for a logic puzzle book where time is of the essence, this is the book for you.

Baron's are the very best logic books...they start with easy to solve and work up to the near impossible. Great for keeping the "aging" brain from completely turning to mush! Nice graphs to work through each puzzle. Keep one in my purse for waiting rooms, airports, and long car rides.

Great logic book.

Great book. The puzzles start off easy and then get more challenging. I only like the kind of logic puzzles that the puzzle baron puts out, and this book delivered hours of fun. The only drawback is that the pages are a little too small...making the box/grid really small.
I would buy something from this company again.

It has remained one of my favorite books, and I purchased this copy to include ...

As a young boy growing up in Florida, I was quite aware of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings classic novel, lovingly written while she was residing at a tiny community in east central Florida, now just a few miles from where I write this, called "Cross Creek" which was the title of a second book she authored, and then her book of annotated "old Florida" recipes called, "Cross Creek Cookery." The epic film made of "The Yearling" premiered at the Florida Theater in Sarasota, near Myakka Park where many of the scenes were filmed, with actors including Gregory Peck starring in the role of young Jody's stern, pioneer father. It has remained one of my favorite books, and I purchased this copy to include the original illustrations. I purchased the book as a gift to the young daughter of an acquaintance, who embodies the spirit of Jody, who originated in the author's mind as a young girl, the gender changed at the suggestion of the publishers who saw more acceptance by the reading public if it were so. The book remains an American classic, and should be on any serious student's reading list. Cross Creek is still there, not much changed from the river side community deep in the pine and oak woods, but now only minutes from Florida Route 301, an area I chose for my retirement, not much changed from the very early years of pioneer Florida, the background for the book. The author lovingly describes every detail of the lush surroundings, the bird and animal life, the magnificent trees and flowers, the pioneer life. The house where the author stayed for a year while writing it, is still there, and is now part of a State Park, dedicated to her memory, at Cross Creek.

One of the finest novels ever written!

It is not hard to see why this modern masterpiece was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1939. It was made into a classic movie starring Gregory Peck as Penny Baxter and was illustrated by the legendary N.C. Wyeth. They would not have exhausted their immense talents on a mediocre book (as some of the reviews have expressed- were they reading the same book as me?).

The story is beautifully crafted and it flows effortlessly. The homespun language is quaint and is perfect for the book (which is set in the late 1800s). The author knew the intricacies of nature in Florida and described it with exactness and beauty. There are many sections of the book that are filled with warm humor and lightheartedness. The deep closeness between the father and son is touching as well as the love between the husband and wife.

Life was a tough struggle then and it is brought out with great skill. Rawlings was a master of timing and description.

(For those high school students who were forced to read the book- read it again in ten years. I felt the same way about "To Kill A Mockingbird". In high school I hated it. Later in life- I loved it. Maturity adds a lot to any book).

N.C. Wyeth's illustrations are perfect for the story. His use of strong directional lighting is fabulous. I would recommend the Scribner Classic (hardcover) with his illustrations in it.

Rawlings lived in the heart of the Florida woods in the winter time and was a keen observer of nature and men. I think I learned more about hunting from this book than from any other source.

Because this book lacks sex, extreme violence, aliens or risque humor- perhaps it might seem dull to some- but it is for those very reasons that I was enthralled with it. Imagine a book filled with brilliant writing, a complex plot which is weaved by a consummate artist and many secondary adventures all which fortify the plot and without one tinge of cussing!

Life knocks a man down

An incomparable story of growth and survival in the most difficult conditions. The Yearling, set in the scrubland of northern Florida a couple of decades after the Civil War, is the story of the Baxter family: little "Penny" Baxter, the father, a saintly figure who is wise, understanding, kind, brave, dutiful, stoic; Ory, the mother, whose essential goodness has been buried to some degree by endless toil and the death of several babies; and Jody, who is about 12 when the story begins, a good-natured sprite for whom nature is benevolent and everything is to be explored.

The Baxters live some 15 miles from the nearest town and four miles from their nearest neighbors, the Forresters, a family of massive sons who are variously good hearted and murderous drunks. In this environment, the little Baxter family scratches out its existence.

Two themes predominate: the loss of childhood innocence and Implacable Nature. The latter is depicted in a variety of ways: a legendary maurauding bear that is seemingly impossible to kill; a pack of hungry wolves several dozen strong; a flood that destroys everything in its path and leaves the plague in its wake; a terrible poisonous snake that threatens the life of one of the characters. In this unforgiving environment, Penny forges ahead at all times, hunting and farming to provide for his little brood, rarely at a loss despite the continual setbacks that afflict "Baxter's Island," the small territory that the family owns.

It's not all harshness, however. Moments of beauty break through at intervals, particularly when father and son are off on a leisurely hunt. There is often a great reverence shown for flowers, trees, waterways, birds, animals, and the landscape as a whole. A lovely character named Fodder-wing (of the Forrester clan) has a whole backwoods menagerie, one that young Jody would duplicate were it not for opposition from his mother, who knows all too well the trouble that animals can cause once they have grown to maturity.

The consolation prize for Jody is Flag, a fawn that he claims after its mother has been killed. Jody loves Flag as much as any 12-year-old boy in the world today loves his dog--much more, really, since it is the only thing in the world that is exclusively his.

Over the course of a year, Jody lives through all the terrors that nature--and, sometimes, man--can inflict and prepares, unknowingly, to eventually take over Penny's role as provider for the family. In the opening chapter, Jody has a particularly fine time off on his own, in the woods, and when it is over he cannot sleep because "a mark was on him from the day's delight, so that all his life, when April was a thin green and the flavor of rain was on his tongue, an old wound would throb and a nostalgia would fill him for something he could not quite remember." It is the last full day of his childhood innocence.

By the end, when events have taken their difficult course, it is Penny who must counsel Jody and explain how he wanted to spare Jody as long as he could from the rigors of adulthood. He explains, "A man's heart aches, seein' his young uns face the world. Knowin' they got to git their guts tore out, the way his was tore. I wanted to spare you, long as I could. I wanted you to frolic with your yearlin'." But, as he points out, life knocks you down, and when you get up, it knocks you down again. "What's he to do then? What's he to do when he gits knocked down? Why, take it for his share and go on." And Jody understands and takes up his new responsbility, to himself and to his family.

I haven't conveyed in this short review the brilliance of the descriptions of the landscape and all it contains, the richness of the many characters who populate the book, or the excitement of the twists and turns that befall the characters--but it's all there. I will close by saying that although The Yearling is catgorized as a sort of children's book, it is one that adult lovers of literature would enjoy; moreover, it would be difficult to read for those under the age of 15, I would think.

Also, for those considering reading this book to their children, as I just did, keep in mind that it's not for the squeamish. As Penny says, and as the book reveals, "You've seed how things goes in the world o' men. You've knowed men to be low-down and mean. You've seed ol' Death at his tricks. You've messed around with ol' Starvation. Ever' man wants life to be a fine thing, and a easy. 'Tis fine, boy, powerful fine, but 'tain't easy."

Great for beginner or novice

Some what new to dehydrating food for storage so I thought this book would help. I learned the science behind dehydrating food and the importance of drying foods properly. A good resource, learned of many foods I did not know I could dehydrate. One thing you have to keep in mind is your dehydrator or method used to dry your foods may vary in the time it takes to be safely done. They thought of that too, and tell you how to check for the best results!

Educational, but not representative

The explanations were good and had a lot of information. However, the questions are not representative of what is encountered on the exam. Use this as a tool to test general principles instead of more specific knowledge. Specific knowledge you will need on the exam, but a solid general foundation will help you in your actual medical practice as well as discovering in which topics you are weak.

Modern horror in a positive vein

Capsule Summary: Rating: Excellent. A "positive horror" novel which is well-written, well-paced, and clever.

The spine of the copy of Running With the Demon that I have just says "Fiction"; associations with the author's name invoke a general "fantasy" expectation. Running With the Demon could be considered "urban fantasy", but to me, it's clearly in another genre.

This is modern horror. This is Stephen King's bailiwick. I found myself thinking a LOT of King's work while reading Running With the Demon, and King suffers badly in the comparison. In this book, Brooks gets to show off a somewhat different style of writing, and demonstrate his skills depicting "regular people". The Shannara books take place in an entirely different world (albeit with the conceit that they are actually this world, after a sort of mystical apocalypse), and the Magic Kingdom books have a comedy slant which drives much of the character action.

Here Terry is writing a serious "Novel of Good and Evil", and his characters have to ring true. They have to be people we can imagine living in this world, even if underneath the world we know there is Something Else. And those who are connected to the Something Else we have to at least believe as residents of this world, as capable of hiding their presence from the mundanes.

Running With the Demon presents us with a world like our own, but one that is, unbeknownst to most people, under seige; a battleground between Good and Evil, or perhaps between Growth and Creation and Decay and Destruction. The Creator-power, God if you will, is the Word, and the destructive is the Void. Agents for each are selected, or select themselves through their choices. The "demon" of the title is a man who has become a demon, something inhuman, through his own choices. His general approach is to manipulate others to perform destructive acts. His main adversary, a Knight of the Word named John Ross, was chosen for this duty by a sort of manifestation of the Word called the Lady (with connections to imagery from Welsh history/myth and, at least in general imagery, seems related to the Arthurian cycle as well).

In a sense Running With the Demon seems to be almost a combination of two King novels, or rather two King novels as they might have been written by a better writer. This is The Stand meets Needful Things, because we have both an apocalyptic threat, a confrontation which may lead to the end of the world, and a story of small-town events, of the ways in which evil can use our own fears and desires against us -- possibly with a soupcon of "The Dead Zone", because John Ross can see visions of possible futures -- terrible futures, usually, which it is his job to prevent, but for which he has only the most cryptic of clues as to HOW to prevent them.

But Running With the Demon is BETTER than these books. The Stand, in the end, had to use a literal Deus Ex Machina, or possibly Machina ex Dei, the Hand of God, to finish off everything -- and in doing so made virtually all the efforts of the people useless except as symbolic acts (i.e., choosing good over evil). Needful Things allowed the main hero to survive, but at the expense of not merely a few other people but an entire town. Running With the Demon is at least as well WRITTEN as anything King's done -- and if you have read "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption", you should know that is high praise indeed -- but more importantly for me, it's a more optimistic book. The choices of humans -- even ordinary, non-powered, non-Chosen humans -- MATTER. Yes, evil is dangerous, and in any fight against it there will be costs, there will be sacrifices, but there can also be victory, and not just Pyrrhic victory, either.

There are indeed losses on the side of Good, and several of them are painful, but none of them are without value. This is a book that brought a tear to my eyes at a few points, and at one ultimate moment a triumphant and appreciative "YES!" for the cleverness of one part of the final resolution.

Different, but good

I bought this Terry Brooks novel mostly out of habit since I am such a HUGE fan of his other fantasy works. Well I wasn't sure what to expect, because I waited until it came out in paperback, and then it stayed on my shelf until after 'A Knight Of The Word' came out in paperback as well. I started to get a little low on the choices of books to read in my personal library, and didn't quite have the money to buy the newest hardback that I wanted, so I finally opened it up and gave it a shot. It WAS a little slow to start, but it just kept me interested--facinated at the premise that the story was centered in the 'real' world, and THAT to me was unique (at least in MY reading circles). Nest is immediatly likeable and a great character. I was a bit sad hearing about Grandpa in the sequel, but Nest can hold her own. It IS different from probably ANYTHING else out there in the fantasy field, and rightfully so since Brooks is NOT one to copy others. I still think his first 3 Shanarra books are his all-time best works, but these certainly are entertaining. If you are a fantasy reader mulling over the decision to pick this series up, go ahead and give it a shot, and don't give up too soon. But also, DON'T expect Shanarra, either. It is SO different from those books as to make you wonder if they are even written by the same person. Terry, if you read this, kudos to you for doing it again, and by the way, WHEN can we expect another Shanarra book...?

"Did You Sell Your Soul for So Little?"

Terry Brooks is best known for his "Shannara" series, which is immensely popular despite being rather obviously inspired by Tolkien's plots, characters and themes. For reasons even I can't explain, I've read quite a few of these novels (despite my distain for them) and so I can say with a fair amount of confidence that "Running with the Demon" is undoubtedly Brooks's best novel. Moving away from his fantasy subworld of dwarfs, elves, magical talismans and plucky young farmboys-cum-heroes, the only thing Brooks hangs on to is his good against evil theme, placing it in contemporary America.

Here good and evil are represented by the Word and the Void; the former benevolent and creative, and the latter destructive. The exact relationship of these two sides is only briefly touched on and as such never explored in any great detail; instead Brooks chooses to focus on one skirmish that both sides are deeply invested in: the fate of a young girl and the events that unfold over a four-day period in a small town called Hopewell, Illinois. Two representatives of the warring sides come here in the days leading up to the fourth of July; a demon who has returned in order to see a long-laid plan come to fruition, and John Ross, a Knight of the Word whose mission is to stop him. As a Knight, Ross spends his nights dreaming of the apocalyptic future that is in store for the world, roaming the wastelands and collecting information and clues of what has transpired in order for him to act in the present to prevent such horrors from ever occurring. At the centre of both their quests is a fourteen-year old girl named Nest Freemark.

Nest is a girl living a double life. On the one hand, she enjoys loving grandparents, a close knit group of friends, a comfortable home adjacent to sprawling parklands and a promising future in athletic competition. But on the other, she sees shadowy figures known as feeders who feast on human emotion, is best friends with a sylvan named Pick who acts as guardian to the park, and has internal magical gifts at her disposal. This situation is tricky enough, but she is often haunted by the fact her mother committed suicide when she was just a baby and the mystery of her completely unknown father; and her Gran (her one human confidant of the world of magic) is close-lipped about both subjects.

Brooks creates a carefully plotted thriller/fantasy that combines...well everything. A gruesome monster gradually breaking out of its tree-prison, feeders luring innocent children into danger, a love-interest that is under threat from a more mundane human-evil, a school bully who holds resentment toward Nest, a ghostly dog-wolf whose origins are a mystery, a steelworks strike that is eroding the well-being of the town and causing some to plot drastic action and a dark family secret are all intertwined wonderfully to create a sustained, exciting, poignant story, that ultimately culminates in a darn good read. Every single plot thread, down to a lost kitten, is wrapped up satisfactorily.

There is only one crucial misstep, and that is when the demon is shown as having enough power to instantaneously kill a human being with a simple gesture. By doing so, Brooks infuses the demon with too much power, making later parts of his plan illogical when he stages various ways to rid himself of enemies that involve more elaborate schemes. If he has that much power over life and death, why doesn't he simply eliminate everyone in his way? With this one exception, the story is tightly structured, with the agendas, motivations and goals of both Ross and the demon well-paced and understandable - and with a final twist that's immensely satisfying.

Whereas most of the characters in the "Shannara" series are standard sword-and-sorcery stereotypes (the wise druid, the mystical elf, the winsome love-interest, the gruff dwarf), Brooks presents here a range of three-dimensional characters who interact with each other realistically. Everyone is given a useful part to play within the context of the story and no one bond is given precedence over any other, whether it be the rocky marriage of Nest's grandparents, the tentative bond that forms between John and Nest, the secret but unified force of Nest and Pick, or the warm and bickering nature of Nest's friends Robert, Cass, Brianna and Jared. Everyone acts in the way one would expect from their character, and all come across as sympathetic, likeable, solid characters - ones that you'd like to meet in real life. Nest in particular shines as the confused, conflicted but ultimately brave young heroine, but other standouts are the grouchy Pick and his owl, Nest's befuddled grandfather Old Bob, her no-nonsense grandmother Evelyn, and her loudmouth friend Robert who comes closer than he realises in discovering the truth about Nest.

"Running with the Demon" was followed by two sequels which paled in comparison to the workmanship and characterisation of the first book. Reading this book left me uplifted and thoughtful, the others left me depressed and dissatisfied thanks to sloppy storytelling and the removal of many favourite characters introduced here. My advice is to read "Running with the Demon" as a stand-alone novel, as the sequels really aren't worth the effort.

Fiona French studied Art Education at Croydon College of Art and went on to work as Bridget Riley's assistant. In 1986 she won the Kate Greenaway Medal for Snow White in New York. In 1992 her first book for Frances Lincoln, Anancy and Mr Dry-Bone was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal and chosen as a Children's Book of the Year. Pepi and the Secret Names (written by Jill Paton Walsh), was one of Child Education's Best Story Books of 1994 and shortlisted for the 1995 Children's Book Award. She is renowned for her distinctively sharp and colourful illustrations. Her other books for Frances Lincoln are Paradise, Bethlehem and Canticle of the Sun; The Smallest Samurai, Glass Garden, Jamil's Clever Cat, Lord of the Animals and Pepi and the Secret Names.

Gr 7 Up—Indio McCracken is half Canadian and half Mayan and lives in Guatemala with his Scottish father, Native mother, and red-headed sister. From the outside, it seems as though Indio's life is pretty great. He is lauded as a classical guitar prodigy who, through a video uploaded by his father, becomes an overnight online sensation. However, behind closed doors, the life Indio leads is one of isolation and loneliness; he is a prisoner to his father in the practice space that has been created for him. Unlike his followers and peers, Indio is not awarded the same freedoms of online internet access. Soon, Indio's dream does come true, and he is given the freedom to attend school, where he endlessly blogs about his life and his guitar. Indio quickly becomes addicted to his new online presence, but then his family is forced to move to Canada, away from the life they knew and from his newfound freedom. Indio is distraught and stops playing his guitar and becomes increasingly depressed. When his mother gives him a new iPhone, Indio falls back into his online addiction. Bastedo shows readers how easy it can be to fall into the world of cyber addiction and how difficult it is to draw the line between the real and virtual worlds—without sounding preachy. A fine piece of work by Jamie Bastedo, a young man (still young?) living in Yellow Knife in norther Canada. Liked the way the story divided into three parts with a subtle return to the beginning before the story ended.

This book was overall just amazing. It was a page turner and I read it in 2 days after picking it up. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good realistic fiction novel
