Good source of data

This atlas was advertised as having many more curves than the first edition, but at first glance it appears that most of these "new" curves come from MIL-HDBK-5 (now MMPDS-01) and the Aerospace Structural Metals Handbook (Purdue CINDAS). If you don't have the first edition, this would be a good source as there are many curves not included in MIL-HDBK or ASMH. The presentation of the curves is uniform (and is much better than what I remember of the first edition) and the pedigree and source references remain excellent.

Engaging and informative. My new favorite beer book.

I read Joshua's other book, Brewed Awakening, and so Amazon recently recommended this book to me. This is a hefty hardcover and the magazine-style layout is eye-catching -- there's a mix of candid photos, behind-the-scenes peeks, and product images, which are really well done. His writing style is casual yet informative, as if you were chatting with a beer-savvy friend.

The book is essentially laid out in classes, which explore different styles of beers such as lagers, wheat beers, Belgians, IPAs, and sours. The chapters examine the brewing aspects for each beer style, historical background, sub-classes of beer, and facts, facts, facts. I love history, so it's nice to get a thorough explanation of the origins of the Bavarian Purity Law and also of obscure beer styles. There are tasting recommendations for each sub-class of beer. However, living in the Midwest, a lot of the particular beers listed are not available to me here. The author was kind enough to provide alternate recommendations for just that reason.

The final chapter goes into cellaring beer and pairing beer with food (before this, my alcohol-pairing knowledge was pretty much limited to pairing white wine with fish and IPAs with spicy dishes). There are some solid guidelines to follow here, and I'm excited to try some out with friends. As with his previous book, this intriguing tome will help guide me in my travels, so that I'll know where to go and what to try. I can't wait to check out some of the gastropubs he mentions!

I am definitely happy with this book and it will be on my coffee table for the foreseeable future.

like sitting with a beer-savvy friend at the bar

Imagine going out with a friend who knows a lot - really quite a lot - about beer and sitting at the bar becomes this great, long conversation about beer and how it is made, and how each style obtains characteristic flavors. This conversation makes you thirsty for more and amazingly, there's a book to read that sounds just like your beer-savvy friend. We all have that friend in Josh Bernstein, who conducts home-brew hours and tastings all around NYC. Though I live far away, in Milwaukee, WI, I really enjoyed the guided tour from Josh, in print. What a treat! Well worth sharing with all your beer-loving friends.

"The book that explains why you really hate computers."

I've admired Jef Raskin for years. For those who don't know, he is the "Father of the Macintosh," one of the original geniuses who guided the Mac in the early days. But, more than a computer scientist, Raskin is a cognitive psychologist. He studies how the brain works with special emphasis on how that relates to us using computers. His magnum opus was the Canon Cat, which was an excellent and well-thought-out little computer.

In The Humane Interface, Raskin goes into detail describing how computers can be made easier to understand and use. Ever want to know why you really don't like Windows? The answer is in this book. In fact, there's so much in this book that makes sense, I really want to send a copy to every employee at Microsoft.

I loved reading this book and nodding my head in rabid agreement. Raskin states, "There has never been any technical reason for a computer to take more than a few seconds to begin operation when it is turned on." So why then does Windows (or Linux!) take so darn long to start up? The PalmPilot is on instantly, as is your cell phone. But for some reason, we tolerate the computer taking a few eons to start. (And until consumers complain about it, things won't change.)

Computers can be easy to use, and the people who design them and design software need to read this book. Do you ever get the impression that the person who designed a piece of software must have come from the same company that designed the front panel on your VCR? Why should you have to double-click anything? What does Ctrl+D mean one thing in one program and a completely different thing in another? And what's the point of the Yes/No confirmation if the user is in the habit of clicking Yes without thinking about it? Raskin neatly probes all these areas.

While I admire everything Raskin has to say, the book is pretty heavy on the psychology end. Myself, I enjoy cognitive psychology (especially books by Raskin's cohort Donald Norman), though some may find that part of the book boring. Even so, Raskin builds and backs his argument in a most eloquent and scientific manner. Especially if you design software or need to teach or train people to use computers, this book deserves a spot on your shelf. --Dan Gookin

Outdated, but interesting.

An interesting read, although many of his examples seem quite outdated. Most of the examples of bad user interfaces come from either Microsoft Windows, or a very old version of Microsoft Word running on a Mac. Most of his examples of good use interfaces come from the ancient Canon Cat computer, or occasionally from the original Macintosh project.

The book does spend a fair amount of time describing various laws and rules for evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of user interface designs. This portion of the text is sure to remain valid throughout the years.

Although not exactly a page turner, I would recommend this book for anybody who designs user interfaces on a regular basis - even if you don't use the laws described, at least knowing about them is likely to make you design better interfaces unconsciously.

I am currently writing my thesis in interaction design and the man who wrote this book, Jef Raskin is in my mind the father of usability and a strong opinion on how to do things right. There is a lot of reference to the cannon cat an early computer that was built with strong engineering, a well thought out interface both physical and soft. It is my opinion to any designer to look at the ideas of this book to understand why a company like apple has been able to reach its current position and the know that it is more than just creative branding and a pop-cult logo.
I found the message here to be a call to designing for the human processor, since the race for hardware speed has already surpassed our bodily capabilities.

A great start... but it falters toward the finish

When I told a friend I had bought this book, he said he liked it through chapter four--but that it went rapidly downhill from there.
He was right.
In those first four chapters, Raskin--the "inventor" of the Macintosh--offers what I think is a terrific introduction to the basics of interface design, cognetics and the quantification of interfaces. I lapped it up, despite Raskin's occasionally convoluted writing style. In fact, it gave me some ideas for a project I had worked on last year.
I suspect I'll turn to the first four chapters for reference in the future.
But Raskin goes afield, I think, in the latter half of the book. He proposes an entirely new interface for PCs--one that dispenses with file names, directory structures and applications.
I'm sure we all agree that the current Windows interface is far from ideal or humane, confusing untold millions and making work more difficult than necessary. But while Raskin's heart and intellect are in the right places, I think his proposed cure is nearly as bad as the disease. I am intrigued, however, by his ZIP or "zooming" navigation approach.
So--is this book worth your time (and money)? You'll have to make your own call. If you already have a background in interface design theory, The Humane Interface offers you a view of Raskin's dream for a new interface. On the other hand, if you know little about interface design, you might really enjoy the introduction Raskin offers and appreciate the stimulus his dream interface provides.

Deep and finely written World War 2 Tale in a Cat's Eye View

On my journey through my childhood books, one of the most pleasant finds has been this book. I loved it dearly until it was misplaced in a move, and since all my books back then came to me from rummage sales and libraries there was no way to replace it until now. I read it again after more than 20 years, and I found myself as enchanted as I had been back then. I love this story. It isn't silly, or childish, but an honest and moving portrait of various lives affected by World War 2 in England. I found myself more horrified by the actions of a grieving widow as an adult than as a child, and understood the adult themes that did not seem to penetrate my consciousness as a child, focused as I was on the plight of the cat. I wish I could have experienced this book as a teenager, because there are deep themes of loss and redemption running throughout that I think could have given me perspective on life as an older individual. All in all, this book is perfect for readers anywhere from a mature eleven year old through adulthood. Younger children may find the adult themes a bit confusing, but I was exceptionally precocious as a child, and had waded through Stephen King's It by ten years of age. Blitzcat is an excellent portrait of a country in turmoil, and a fascinating cross section of the different strains of English citizenry. There is tragedy, and heartbreak, but the story is about the triumph of the living spirit over the perils of war and the evils that humanity can inflict on both itself and its companions. However, the ending is one I consider triumphant and fitting, and left me with a lovely feeling of contentment and satisfaction. If you have an intelligent child who is fond of cats, or perhaps studying this particular war, or maybe just a bright spark who wants to KNOW things, then you should consider this book. One of my all time favorites.

Highly Recommended!

While I recognize that Peter J. Lusby has a right to his opinion I disagree with him on so many points.

In my opinion, I don't think Mr Westall was even thinking of an anti-war stance. He was telling a story as it could have/did happen.

I do not think the story, "dwelt excessively on the horrors of war." He simply recounted what took place.

Did Mr. Lusby go searching through the book to find those descriptive passages he quoted?

What about the uplifting material?

In my opinion, I don't think Mr Westall chose, "to focus on the ugliness, on the opportunism, on the occasional, inevitable breakdown of human decency."

I found Blitz Cat to be a remarkable story. I couldn't put it down.

Perhaps it is a little advanced for younger readers but I don't think it deserved such a negative review.

Blitz Cat tells the story of a cat who separated from its owner determines to find him... and along the way we are introduced to all the people he encounters on his journey.

Yes, there is tragedy but there is also joy.

I recommend this book most highly.

The story was very well written and kept you interested to the end. I love stories about animals. Especially cats. The writer made you feel the cats personality and you had to admire her for her tenacious pursuance of her owner. You always feared for her life up to the end.

Easy to understand secrets of the rich.

A very informational book complete with so much good advice. The thing I like best is that the book includes so much business information that you need to know, that you may not have known, which isn't common knowledge. He helps you to become more financially literate by sharing his knowledge about business and the secrets of the rich. I also liked that it was easy to read and understand.

Book was a good read. My problem is the first premise, that it's not necessary to live below your means, Author claims this enforces a scarcity mentality. I disagree. Excess cash is a sign of prosperity, not scarcity.

Not the best in terms of ease of use

I have viewed many different clinical skills and assessment guides and I just personally think this one is set up so oddly. It is supposed to be a handbook for ease of access but I don't find it to be a quick reference guide. However, the information is excellent and complete. I wish I had bought the actual textbook version instead of the handbook version (which was recommended by my school so it could be brought easily to lab or clinical) because I don't find it "handy" at all. More of a sit down and read type of book in smaller format. I actually rarely use it now and tend to just google or reference note cards for the quick information I need. On a positive not, it is not information this handbook lacks. I am simply not a fan of the pictures and charts interrupting the flow of the explained assessment techniques. Perhaps it would have been better to have put the comparison charts or pictures at the end of each chapter after the assessment data has been explained. I say this because the book is supposed to be smaller and more condensed than a textbook. If you are using it as a review and already know what, say, retinal hemorrhages and cotton wool patches in the eye look like, you don't want a whole page of pictures interrupting the flow of your assessment explanation. But overall great book with well explained "normal" and "deviations from normal" data to look for in your assessment and how that can vary among pediatric and geriatric clients.
