[NOT YOUNG ADULT] What could have been a great story, shot down by unlikable characters, dubious consent concerns, and worse.

I need to say right up front: This book is marketed as "Young Adult", and it is anything BUT. The category is defined by the themes contained within the story. Just because your main characters are all about 17-year olds, that doesn't make you a YA book. YA and I are so close we're practically family. This book was like a stranger at the dinner table.

I actually interrupted another book to read this one, and I'm still not sure why. It's not even in my normal genre preference. I just remember reading the summary, seeing the cover, and thinking "I'd like to read that." Ella Harper was an interesting main character, full of spirit, and she led her story well. The writing was even pretty decent for the first 2/3rd of the book.

Call me old-fashioned, when we decide "attempted date rape" is the best catalyst for getting the two leads to hook up, the story stops being enjoyable. Now, the male lead, Reed Royal, did not actually attempt the date rape, but when Ella is drugged and the Royal brothers save her, how is the natural conclusion "Someone is gonna need to 'help' her with her drug-induced horniness." Sorry, what? WHAT? So maybe Reed Royal didn't attempt the date rape, but he's 1000000% guilty of engaging in dubious consent.

"I feel like I'm taking advantage of you."

Yes, Reed, because you are! Ella is high on a date-rape cocktail, and you're like "Well, but she said she was okay with me 'helping' her, so..." This isn't even the only incident like this in the story. At one point Reed actually *propositions* her while they're out yachting, saying that she's a dirty whore but he'll take care of her sexual needs as long as she doesn't touch the rest of his family. Ella's second morning in the household, two of her new "brothers" joke about raping her. To Ella's credit, she does point out to the readers "Sexual assault isn't about getting laid. It's about power.", indicating they don't need to use sex to have power over her.

Ella's actually very good about playing it smart. It's something that made her extremely likeable as a character. (Up until sex was involved, and suddenly she can't think at all.) She knows a handsome face doesn't make someone a good person. Ella gets the difference between what her body wants and what her mind wants. She knows the value of education as a means to rise above poor circumstances. Ella Harper has lots of qualities that make her a great main character.

Remember when I said the writing was good for the first 2/3rds of the book and was not Young Adult? The last third of this book read like a smutty magazine you'd find under a mattress. Nevermind that Ella was smart and self-sufficient. Once she and Reed hook up, it's like sex-sex-sex all the time on her brain. She can barely look at Reed without wanting to get busy with him, and the book goes into GRAPHIC detail about their sexual encounters. Look, bedroom doors were invented for a reason. These are 17-year olds. I don't need to hear all the gory details of whose fingers are going where. ...I'm gonna say it again for good measure: SEVENTEEN-YEAR OLDS.

It's a shame that I power read through the first 2/3 so quickly because the story was engaging, yet it's the uglier remaining third that's leaving such an imprint on my mind. The first part of the book actually had a good premise, familiar but solid. Poor girl with nothing gets plucked from obscurity into a life of riches. I didn't even take issue with the idea that she was stripping when we first meet her, because she's doing it to survive. Can't fault someone for surviving, and she's smart about her work, putting her safety and schooling first. I actually had to pause around page 55 and split a side from laughing. "Four boys who rule the school, and their decree sets the law for how poor-girl Ella will be treated." I've seen this premise before, and lemme tell ya, I LOVE Hana Yori Dango. Downside? The boys in HYD weren't such *complete* a-holes, unlike the Royals, and they actually learned and grew from their experiences in the story. The only redeemable character in this bunch is Easton. He's the only one that makes up for his initial behavior and makes an attempt to be better with Ella. I see so many reviews for this story chittering on about how great all the boys are and I'm like "...Seriously?" Either their standards for men are terrible, or mine are too high. Maybe both? Easton was sweet, Gideon was neutral, and the other three were like "Please go to other side of your mansion house and never interact with Ella again, thank you."

There was ONE saving grace of the distasteful sexual content that I feel warrants a shout out. Mean Girl Savannah, one of Ella's arch nemeses, takes the time to warn her of her potential date rapist (albiet too cryptically for Ella to get it). "Look, I don't like you much, but I wouldn't let even my worst enemy be sucked in by him." She put aside all her issues with Ella to warn her. I 100% support girls looking out for other girls. More of this in the book and less of the boot knocking, and this might have been the story I hoped it was going to be.

I debated with myself at some length whether to round up or down for my site rating. The book was a solid 2.5 stars for me. The book had plenty of enjoyable material (round up), but it also had some really sketchy content (round down). Ultimately I had to ask myself "How much do I want other people reading this story? So I'm rounding down. I hate the idea of a young impressionable girl looking for a proper Young Adult book to find this one instead. Hell, I wouldn't even want a young boy to read this and get any ideas. I feel it's almost my responsibility to do what I can to discourage them both.

Good read but...

I thought this book was a good read. It has good character development, a fast moving plot, and definitely interesting characters. I liked the main character. She was strong, she wasn't perfect and she was insightful regarding how she could be influenced by her history. In fact, I liked that she was aware of her own trauma. The author definitely should have addressed this trauma more, however. It's traumatic for a 15 year old to be taking care of her sick, dying mother, to be working two jobs, to have a history of family violence (or attempted anyway), to have to deal with seeing the aftermath of domestic violence on your mom (before she was sick), to have her mother die, and to be an underage stripper on top of all of that? This brings me to my next question...How was CPS NOT called?? Oh and while we're at it, who in their right mind would believe that a 17 year old is the 35 years that a driver's license states? Nobody. Because even with a boatload of makeup on, you would look too young. But whatever. I can "suspend my disbelief".

I'm not a big fan of the amount of violence and sexual violence that happens in this book. And then to have our girl FALLING for that? I did like that she recognized how screwed up that was...but still! It just...sits wrong with me. But then maybe, because of her past, this is what she's looking for. I did like that this bad boy didn't do a complete turn around. That's wonderful, actually. I mean, we get to see what motivates him (the trauma of losing his own mother--a lot of dead mother's in this book now that I think about it) but he makes no apologies. He just sort of..warms up to our girl.

All in all I'd give it a 3.something. There were flaws but I believe that's the point of it all. Just didn't care for the violence, the dating violence, and the sexual violence.

OH. MY. GOSH.

WOW! I put this book on the back burner for a while because the synopsis just didn't grab my attention, but it had decent reviews so I put it on my wish list and waited. I finally purchased it and read the entire book in one day. I was sucked in! The plot is phenomenal!! It's so much more than a rags to riches story. The characters are so complex and well developed - they each have their own flavor and stand out independently. Ella is a spit fire! I loved her right away. Her devotion to her mother and to herself (getting a good education, supporting herself alone) makes her one of the most likable characters I've read in a long time. Her relationships with the Royal family seemed so real - I could believe that their relationships were based on real life, even though they're completely fictitious. THANK THE LORD that the second book is already out because I would have been stewing in my head until it's release!! Don't be put off by some of the other reviews like I was - this book is fantastic. Well edited, well thought out, believable, lovable - I'd give it ten stars if I could!

Playing card-sized puzzles really make you think...

When you buy this deck, keep in mind that these are fairly difficult puzzles. They require some serious thought; they're not rapid-fire quiz questions like those in Will Shortz's Brain Busters, Puzzlemasters, or Mind Games. For my purposes -- sitting around the campfire or in a car on a road trip -- Brain Busters Puzzlemasters and Mind Games are much more fun!!! The best thing about this deck is it's size -- like a deck of cards, it's easy to stuff in a pocket or a pack.

Fun and interesting

We play them a couple at a time, sometimes over breakfast. Never more than 3 or 4 puzzles at a time, though - we stretch the fun out over several weeks. Will Shortz has a collection of similar decks, and we're always glad to find a new one.

We also like the product design, and the sturdiness of the cards and the box. Nothing flimsy here, really well produced.

Though some of the puzzle solutions are a bit outlandish, this is a great game to play in a group where each person has a chance to contribute to finding the answer. Very rewarding once you get them right!

The Sutton family is AMAZING!

You want a nice caring and loving family to read about. Then get the first book A Christmas Memory and then this one! I love it when family is there for you no matter what, that's unconditional love. Max Vos can have you peeking around a corner wondering OMG what is next and he can have you thinking OMG that is so romantic. That man has it in him to write so many different ways it blows me away. I truly enjoyed reading this part II about Adam & JJ and the Sutton family. It is what families should be about. Just take my advice because I am not giving anything away and go read the books. They are some wonderful reads by Max Vos.

Needed to be longer, too many gaps in the story (MILD SPOILAGE)

Funny, but I don't recall the other book leaving out this much information, but then again it was this time last year that I was reading it so maybe my memory's not so fresh. This book is good, but one thing that threw me off was the passage of time; there was no indication of it. "2 weeks later" "6 months later" these are only 3 word phrases, it wouldn't take much to add them. But one minute it was Christmas, then after a separator in the middle of the page - which usually indicates a scene change - it's spring break, then next thing you know it's Thanksgiving. One of the reasons this is a problem is right before the page separator, Adam and JJ were saying they needed to discuss something important, and then after the separator, not only has it been discussed, but the process has been put in motion and they're almost completely done with it. No build-up or anything. This happened several times, which left me scratching my head and wondering "well, what happened in between?" I was glad that they were able to help provide a safe place for Thad, but what happened when they went to talk to his parents? Was there no argument or backlash at all? No obstacles in their way? And how did they decide to get legal guardianship? And why was the situation with Andrea helping out Adam and JJ handled like it was no big deal, just every day happenstance? And what happened with Grace Griffin? And this may be minor, but how on Earth did Thad get a new love interest before Adam's brother, Matt? Too many questions. However, these things are not guaranteed to keep me from reading more by this author, because his books have sweet story lines with very little angst.

Fabulous Follow Up

This was a great follow up to A Christmas Memory. It's been a year since we last saw Adam and JJ. They are now settling into their new married life together and are about to make some new memories at the next Christmas. JJ is still becoming accustomed to being surrounded by such a warm and loving family, but the Suttons sure do make it easy. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to be around a family like them. There are laughs, teasing, and just general fun when they are all together proving that family is what you make it. We learn a little more about JJ and his past, but the focus here is really on how the family sticks together.

There are also a few side stories here. The homophobic ex-fianc� of Matt is also back, unfortunately, though Maggie and her boys quickly put her in her place once again. The bigger addition is Thad, a student at the school where Adam and JJ teach. His religious extremist parents threw home out on the street when he told them he was gay, and this is where Adam and JJ find him. With things being shuffled around in the Sutton family, Maggie ends up being in the perfect position to take Thad in. Of course, the rest of the Sutton clan take to him as well, and he is enveloped in Sutton love. I really enjoyed this part of the story.

This is another quick afternoon read that centers around the Christmas holiday. I can't believe I'm reading more sweet and fluffy from Mr. Vos (and enjoying it!), but he really does a nice job. This is definitely more than just a short Christmas story though, and with the somewhat open ending, I'm looking forward to seeing these guys and their wonderful family again.

One of the best books I've ever read on addiction

As a recovery advocate and the father of someone in long-term recovery, I've read more books about addiction than I can count. When my son first started struggling with drugs, I made a vow to educate myself as much as I possibly could. Knowledge is power, and I wanted to know *everything* about addiction. I still do. So I read about it. A lot. And I can honestly say that Maia Szalavitz's "Unbroken Brain: A Revolutionary New Way of Understanding Addiction" is one of the best books I've ever read on the subject.

Maia Szalavitz is a fabulous writer who has penned a wonderful, very forward-thinking book about addiction. She introduces us to some new theories about addiction, several of which may have people re-examining the way they've thought about one of the most prevalent and deadliest problems in America today.

Szalavitz sets out to show that addiction isn’t a choice or moral failing. "But it’s not a chronic, progressive brain disease like Alzheimer's, either," she notes. “Instead, addiction is a developmental disorder--a problem involving timing and learning, more similar to autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dyslexia than it is to mumps or cancer." Yes, Szalavitz is blazing new trails here.

The author contends that "addiction doesn't just happen to people because they come across a particular chemical and begin taking it regularly. It is learned and has a history rooted in their individual, social, and cultural development." She adds that the addicted brain is not "broken," as many other researchers and writers have suggested. Instead, she says, the addicted brain has "simply undergone a different course of development....addiction is what you might call a wiring difference, not necessarily a destruction of tissue."

Looking at addiction as a learning disorder may seem strange to some, but Szalavitz states that doing so "allows us to answer many previously perplexing questions." And in "Unbroken Brain," Szalavitz--who is 25+ years in recovery from cocaine and heroin addiction herself--tells us how learning is a part of every aspect of addiction, oftentimes drawing upon her personal experience to illustrate her points.

There are so many interesting and thought-provoking topics covered in this book. From the problems associated with waiting for someone to hit "rock bottom" to the myth of the addictive personality; and from the issues surrounding 12-step programs to why harm reduction isn't a bad thing. ("Harm reduction recognizes [the] social and learned components of addiction. It 'meets people where they're at,' and it teaches them how to improve their lives, whether or not they want to become abstinent." Amen to that.)

If you or someone you love has been touched by addiction, or if you're just interested in this fascinating subject, I cannot recommend "Unbroken Brain" highly enough. This book contains a wealth of information, but Maia Szalavitz presents it in an organized manner while writing in a clear and understandable voice. Trust me: You will not be bombarded with a bunch of scientific language that you don't understand.

Szalavitz writes in the introduction, "Only by learning what addiction is--and is not--can we begin to find better ways of overcoming it. And only by understanding addicted people as individuals and treating them with compassion can we learn better and far more effective ways to reduce the harm associated with drugs." That is definitely the approach we should be taking with addiction. Hopefully, Maia Szalavitz's innovative new book will be the catalyst for some positive change.

"Unbroken Brain" shows struggling 12 Stepper a "Brave New World!"

I HAD to buy a brand new copy of this book. At 55, after a long history of polysubstance abuse, and a 12-step groups expat, I'm at a loss to explain how the urge to 'Use' or "Drink" to excess has faded into memory. Other compulsive behaviors have remained however, so I needed to read this book.

Even if you don't like to read, you'll find this blockbuster-compelling ; as Szalavitz,both both a truther and survivor of addiction, rehab and recovery, from an 'Inside Out' frankness so poetic it knocks my socks off.

It shows the WHY our country's punitive, even "Draconian" measured and laws put in place failed to yield lifesaving results as we foolishly abused people with addiction on the "War On Drugs."

Another thing.....AA'ers, often say "Once and Alcoholic always an Alcoholic." (I'm not sure if this is said verbatim in The Big Book but it's implied)

They apply similar dogma with regards to recovery from other compulsive behaviors.

In my life...well, maybe not so much.... It's all in the book.
If you are affected by or interested in addictive behavior, people who are dually diagnosed with a mental illness and substance abuse..

Even if you're not ready to 'recover,' (another stigmatizing term).this book is written for you. ...
Who knew some people outgrow this 'learning' issue? and furthermore explains why those laws and policies have never worked and how sadistic protocols, like being in the 'hotseat' during rehab group therapy doesn't help anyone, only reinforces low self esteem, shame and stigma. I'm so excited about the promise of this new direction in thought on how to more effectly address the Opiate epidemic and other consequences of addictive patterns (compulsive gambling to an extreme on both sides of my family tree..) even including new ways to deal with eating dfsorders and health problems like Obesity...well, you've just got to read this book.. That's the end of it. I'm going back to it now. Allison Biszantz Aka "Strong"

Excellent review of important advances in addiction science.

This book is not "revolutionary" but evolutionary. It is a more personable and less didactic version of The Biology of Desire. It is very accessible and provides an intelligible review of the science supporting the concept of addiction as a developmental learning disorder. In my estimation, this thesis has considerable merit. This book is a vast improvement over Hari's Chasing the Scream, which I think is gratuitously self promotional and lacking in basic research.

The central issues of addiction science are (1) understanding why some people become addicts and others don't, and (2) accurately predicting how an addict can stay clean and sober. This book is an excellent review of current understanding.

Here are some of the take-homes:

* Addiction is obsession and compulsion. Some (not me) would add that it is obsession and compulsion in the face of negative consequences.
* Addiction has relatively strong genetic heritability, but environmental set and setting greatly facilitate its expression.
* Trauma has a big influence on expression of addiction, but it is neither necessary or sufficient. This can happen via organic plastic changes in the brain that occur in response to traumas, or quite possibly through epigenetic processes. The latter offers a fascinating potential for further understanding of this baffling disorder.
* Addiction is a dysfunction of the brain and is not best characterized as a disease.
* The expression of addiction represents a process of plastic reorganization of brain form and function that develops over the course of the addiction. In this sense, it is developmental.
* Although it can occur at any age, it is far more common in late adolescence and early adulthood. The brain is still remodeling itself, although it is functionally plastic for a lifetime. Up through early adulthood the executive functions are still forming. Most of us survive bad decisions during this time.
* All learning involves mostly the same neurobiological processes. Learning like addiction is utterly dependent on affective state. Any good teacher knows this.
* Romantic love is addiction. Several other behaviors can result from the neurobiology of obsession and compulsion. These may or may not be associated with drugs or alcohol.
* Treating addiction as a disease has led to inappropriate management of those afflicted. Similarly, treating it as a choice is counter our now well developed understanding of the neurobiology. Criminalization is barbaric and reprehensible. The War on Drugs is simply monstrous.
* Use of mandatory 12 step programs is a violation of separation of church and state. Always has been, always will be. It matters little what adherents think about it not being a religion.
* She offers compelling evidence of who official policies to support harm reduction are of great benefit to addicts and society.
* The author does a great job of separating incentive salience (wanting) from the effect of a drug (liking, or in the case of crack and, say, end stage alcoholism, definitely not liking).
* Recovery for the vast majority of addicted souls is utterly dependent on sharing and connection with other people, preferably others in recovery. This is the one demonstrably essential part of all recovery programs.

Issues that are poorly dealt with in this book:

* The reality that renewed use after any period of sobriety can result in renewed obsession and compulsion.
* While the author correctly points out that addiction is not a character flaw or moral failing, she does not address dealing with the moral baggage that almost every addict carries as they enter recovery.
* At times it seems that she has forgotten the process of her own recovery and is engaging in speculation about what must have happened.
* She believes that 12 step programs have no place in treatment. I say, it depends. Surely 12 step recovery has been abused. Bullying has no place in any stage of recovery.
* The review of New Zealand's drug policies is encyclopedic and dry without any meaningful analysis.
* She is dead wrong about Moderation Management being an option for anyone who is truly manifesting organically based obsession and compulsion (i.e., true addiction rather than physiological dependence). This is an amazing lapse coming from someone who was without question addicted and should know better. Perhaps she did not bother to look up the history of this disastrous program.
* None of the current spate of books on addiction makes a decent attempt to understand the neurobiology of recovery. This is truly the frontier.

"Becoming a House Spouse" is a succinct, yet comprehensive guide on the choice to become a stay at home spouse and how to pursue that goal. I was thoroughly impressed by the author's ability to provide detailed and helpful information that takes the reader step by step through how to consider if becoming a stay at home spouse is the right choice for their family. Great read for male or female alike if "becoming a house spouse" is something you are contemplating.

My husband and I have talked about one of us staying home for a few years but never really knew if we were ready. This little book gives a really great overview of things to consider before you make the leap to being a stay-at-home wife/husband (or mother/father). It's a really quick read which is a bonus if you're trying to read it as a couple. Even though it's really short, it's full of some great advice. I do wish she would've provided more information for some sections; even though she did give other helpful websites/books about financial planning, I think a sample budget (or a few sample budgets across income brackets) would've been useful. I'm just so curious about how people make one income work. Overall I was really pleased with the tips/advice given. My husband & I are still trying to figure out if we can swing a single-income household but this book has really helped to guide our conversations in a more productive direction.

I had already made the leap to becoming a stay at home mom or 'house spouse' when I read this book, but I found the topics covered in the ebook very helpful anyway! The book was easy to read while the content was well thought out including very specific subjects essential to the success of this arrangement. The author suggested several guidelines for communication that my spouse and I had not reviewed before making the decision to resign my position at work outside of the home, so reading this book became a great way to initiate open conversations regarding the issues that surround some of the topics that we had not covered. I highly suggest to anyone considering becoming a ‘house spouse’ that you read this ebook and discuss the pros and cons highlighted in it with your partner.

Howard Blooms new masterpiece

I have read many books on Islam, but Howard Blooms book just blew me away. The genius author of The Lucifer Principle and Global Brain applies his vast mind to the history of the Islamic faith and the terrifying consequences that we see unfolding all around in the modern world. Prepare to find out the shocking truth about the so called "religion of peace". Impossible to over praise.

Howard Bloom, the Double-Speak Traitor

Although I know Howard Bloom is telling the truth about Islam and its horror stories, I can’t help thinking that the author talks on both sides of his mouth: 1) to please the Muslims and 2) scare the infidels. I went through the whole book quite fast and didn’t find any "future" scenarios regarding Muslims fighting Muslims (correct me if I’m wrong since I browse the book more than I read it). The superorganism made only of Muslims will implode as the Muslims will be fighting among themselves like they are doing right now in the Middle East. In fact, when I was in Morocco, Muslims used to say put two Arabs together and they will fight! Islam is a cradle for psychopaths and it’s impossible for psychopaths to live together: there is too much negative energies even if they have the same enemies in common, The Infidels or the Nerds, like Howard Bloom calls them. Also Muslims never invented anything, not even algebra they claimed they invented. They are only here to destroy and maintain the perpetual arm wrestling between the good and the bad or the yin and the yang. With them, we will go back to the Dark Ages and believe me there never was Arabic Golden Ages since wherever Islam trespasses the civilization passes away (Ibn Khaldun).
Anyway no superorganism can survive, less one worldwide superorganism. It’s bound to eventually burst into pieces as the pecking order, greed for power, corruption, hatred, jealousy will always be omnipresent and omnipotent. However, it’s quite disconcerting to witness the apathy of the West who are too busy to satisfy their own materialistic narcissistic needs and scoff at those “unrealistic” threats. Like Howard Bloom I, very early in my life, sensed this kind of threat but I believe there is another bigger threat, the destruction of our planet. Who is going to destroy first: the big companies or Islam? That is the question.
NOTE: I did prefer “The Lucifer Principle” to “The Mohammed Code.” I read The Lucifer Principle three times and was delighted to discover new things even the third time. The Mohammed Code is a rehash of the history of Islam and his psychopath Mohammed but it’s worth reading, especially for those people who have no idea about what’s in store for them.

This review is for the Kindle version. It's extremely frustrating that it does not provide the page number. It only does it by location. So when the professor asks us to flip to a certain page in the book I have to go back to the cover and count the pages. I wish I would have just ordered the actual book. Never again.
