From Publishers Weekly
In the closing days of WW II, top Soviet agent Maxim Isaev, who has wormed his way into the SD (the Nazi security service) as Standartenfuhrer Von Stirlitz, has scored a brilliant success in undermining the Nazi atomic weapons program. Now his masters in Moscow involve him in a new project: finding out who among the Nazi leaders is negotiating a separate peace with the West (which would undermine Stalin's plans for Eastern Europe). Dogged by the Gestapo, "Von Stirlitz" maneuvers through an ever-tightening web. Semyonov has been called the Russian Le Carre, but a more apt comparison would be Manning Coles: the novel recalls A Toast to Tomorrow , without the jokiness of that 1940s classic. Certainly, compared with Le Carre's characteristic brooding on moral ambiguities and betrayal, Semyonov's work is downright sunny. He's an expert mimic of voices--from that of the bureaucrat to the inner cries of a fugitive on the run. His historical reading of the period is sophisticated and unideological. All told, this espionage novel is satisfying on every level .

From Library Journal
Just as double agent Stirlitz must zero in on the Nazi leader secretly negotiating peace with Anglo-American Allies, so must the reader sort the crucial from the plethora of incidental characters in this new translation of Semyonov's Himmler Ploy (Popular Lib., 1978; the author's name was transliterated as Semenov). Within the period of a few days in spring 1945, "SS Officer" Stirlitz penetrates the maze of jealousy and deceit surrounding Himmler, Goebbels, Goring, and Bormann and manages to eliminate the mistrust growing between Anglo-American and Russian Allies. A convoluted and mechanical work recommended only for large fiction collections that didn't buy the earlier translation.

Best spy novel I have ever read
By Andrew
Best spy novel I have ever read. It is written by a Russian with a Russian spy in Nazi Germany as a hero. The events of the novel coincide with the real life meeting between the OSS's Allen Dulles and representatives of Heinrich Himmler. The hero is out to sabotage their attempt at a separate peace.

Spy novel from the Soviet side
By S. Smith-Peter
This is an interesting, twisty spy novel about the Soviet spy von Stirlitz (really a Russian named Maxim Isaev) who infiltrates the Nazi command and works to upset their plans towards the end of World War Two. I found it especially intriguing to read what's basically genre fiction from a Soviet point of view. The Americans are not to be trusted in the novel, as they - especially Dulles - are presented as pro-Nazi. The pacing is good and at the end I was reading pretty fast. If you're interested in spy novels or World War Two, this would be a good book to try.

Zen and the Art of Being a Spy
By Shahryar Eivazzadeh
Semyonov by depicting "Stirlitz", the hero of the story, tries to show how one can be a zen guru in the world of spies. So read the book as the story of a Zen Guru. I specially love the last 3 paragraphs of the book .The feeling of salvation portraied in the lonliness of Stirlitz in a jungle born to spring , a well finished impossible mission , an unknown future and the "Seventeen Moments of Spring" song being sang in the background.
