Read Write Teach: Choice and Challenge in the Reading-Writing Workshop, by Linda Rief

Veteran teacher and author Linda Rief has inspired thousands of practitioners across the nation to lead adolescent students on a journey to becoming lifelong readers and writers. In ReadWriteTeach, Linda offers the what, how, and why of a year's worth of reading and writing for middle and high school students with a framework that is as flexible as it is comprehensive.

"...This book isn't a compilation of tear-out reproducibles designed to help us replicate Linda's practices," writes Maja Wilson in the foreword. "Instead, it's the most powerful gift that a master teacher can give us: the story of her thinking and feeling as she teaches." Linda's insights and beliefs are woven throughout a comprehensive overview of best literacy practices, which include:

  • essentials in the reading-writing workshop
  • grounding our choices in our beliefs
  • getting to know ourselves and our students as readers and writers.

Students' voices, through examples of their writing, drawing, and thinking, resonate throughout the book and characterize the thoughtful readers, writers, and citizens of the world that they become under Linda's guidance.

Online companion resources include all of the handouts that Linda uses in her own classroom.

I appreciate this book! Easy to read and packed with ideas that you can implement now. Linda Reif shows you how to infuse readers and writers workshop. As a 5th grade teacher, it's always hard to "fit" everything in and sometimes it feels like we can't do everything well- quantity over quality, as we're given curriculum and then expected to teach a 90 minute reading block and 60 minute writing block, along with 60 minute math, science, and social studies blocks. How do we do we fit it all in? It's never occurred to me to use a RWN (readers and writers notebook)- I also loved that she included accountable talk, close reading, student autonomy, peer reviews, conferencing, evaluation, and assessment tips. May be written for a middle or high school 60 minute block, but as an intermediate elementary teacher, I found it golden!

Linda Rief was my middle school teacher - she freed me to overcome multiple obstacles to both writing and reading. She gave me confidence that I had a voice and helped me build the mechanics of writing so that my words would be taken seriously. I loved her as a teacher read her book when I became a middle school language arts teacher.

Can't say enough good stuff about this book
By Miss Crispy
Can't say enough good stuff about this book. I teach high school English, and this book, along with The Book Whisperer, will change your life if you're open to a good shake-up in your classroom. You can still meet common core requirements, but now you can also encourage and inspire your students, too.
