Newer isn't always better

This is an old book relatively speaking. But it covers the basics of radiation therapy physics in excruciating detail while being easy to read. Although radiation therapy equipment is rapidly changing and things like cobalt and radium are "obsolete", you still need the basics, and I think Selman does this very well. Khan may be good for reference if you have a good physics background. But I would recommend Selman because it assumes you literally know nothing about radiation physics.

An informative and detailed reference guide.

While this book was very informative in helping me learn BIRT w/ little previous knowledge of it & Eclipse - I must say it was about as dry as reading a dictionary from cover to cover. Great if you need a reference manual, or if you don't require a book to constantly keep your attention to learn. It really does cover so many amazing aspects of this platform, there really wasn't much information I had to seek elsewhere to complete our project.

It is a Dictionary of BIRT

I use this book regularly in my work. It is not the one book you need to learn how to use BIRT, it is book you need when trying to figure what something means and how it works. It should be used in connection with the tutorial books (I think you have to take the class to get them). Over 800 pages full of things you might want to look up.

As others have mentioned it is not for reading cover to cover, and the examples in this book are not for guiding you through a project. It is to BIRT what a Dictionary is to a language, a reference book.

NOTE: There are tutorials in the BIRT help menu, if your just getting started and trying to learn basic skills start with them.

I purchased the BIRT: A Field Guide (3rd Edition) (Eclipse Series) when a company that we provide Web services decided that they wanted some reports rewritten using BIRT. Since I had never used BIRT, I purchased this book as a reference. I was able to code/test/release my first BIRT report. However, I found the examples of using visibility properties on the reports to be lacking.

A delightful modern day fairy tale

I would give this a four star instead of five simply because it was far too short but that wouldn't be fair. I realize it was a novella but it ended too soon! We have all been entranced by fairy tales since we were children. This is a version for those of us a little older, but just as delightful. The characters are fun and believable with all the quirks and problems of our modern day world, but they still have the desires and needs of those characters we loved in the storybooks. The setting was a believable invented country that I'd love to visit in person instead of vicariously. The description was just enough to whet your appetite but not overcome the story. I can't wait for more of this - I believe it will be a series, as it should be. Readers will want more of these characters. Well done, Rachel Branton!

Fun romantic

This is a kindle world that is The Royals of Monterra from the book Royal Date by Sariah Wilson.

It is a novella. Only 93 pages. Wish it were longer though it does a nice job. it is romantic, funny and charming.

Amelia Lennox is working as a maid at the Lodge Royal. She has found out that she has a half sister who now is Queen of Monterra. Amelia has no other family.

Davide Ciano meets Amelia and is drawn to her right off. He has had bad experiences with women just wanting him for his title or money so he is planning to hide that he is a rich duke from her at first.

I loved the scene with them all riding in the woods. I admit I laughed a lot with them. Also liked the ball scenes.

I would read more books from Rachel Branton in the future.

For Anyone Who Loves Romance

This one was a really good contemporary romance where Amelia has come to Monterra to try to meet her long-lost sister and ends up meeting Davide. She is attracted to him, and they start to act on their feelings, but he's keeping a secret about who he really is, just as she doesn't mention who her sister really is. The romance is so good that I was flipping pages as fast as I could to see if they could survive the secrets coming out. Ms. Branton has written three-dimensional characters that were realistic and fun, with a hero and heroine you can't help but cheer on to a happy ending. Loved it!

I Could Have Saved A Lot of Money On Therapy Had I Read This First! Outstanding!

This book is simply outstanding! Concise, educational, informative, heartbreaking, liberating, empowering....I could go on and on.

As a woman who was deceived and abused by a narcissist, I can only say this book was essential to my understanding of what I had truly experienced. This book has helped return my sanity & sense of strength. Instead of blaming and shaming myself for what happened, Stalking The Soul helped me understand that I possess many positive qualities that acted as a magnet for the Narcissist. I am an educated, vivacious, life loving, happy and well connected woman with many healthy, long term friendships and close family relations. I am active, intelligent, attractive. I made a terrific target for the Narcissist and he was drawn to me as a Vampire is to blood. In fact, Narcissists really are vampires of energy, souls, and spirits.

This book helped me understand why I ignored those many little red flags and my inability to comprehend the inconsistencies, crazy making, and exchanges - whether big or small, as they all occurred. This book helped me understand completely the behavior of the Narcissist when he lost control of me. 4 months into the relationship I had a strong gut feeling and began to back out, and in his attempt to regain a sense of power and importance, he deliberately inflicted as much pain and insult as possible. I had never been attacked like that in my life and it was incomprehensible to me. Pure malice.

As Ms. Hirigoyen clarifies, only by examining the entire relationship in reverse do we comprehend the events, the barbs, the slights - the little red flags we dismissed - because it was all disassociated when it occurred. It simply did not make sense to us due to our values. WE, the victims/survivors, came to the relationship authentically and fully with good intentions and values that were polar opposite of the Narcissist. We brought a lot to the table, as the author says. As the relationship evolved, we trusted this Narcissist with our vulnerabilities & weaknesses as one does in a healthy, honest relationship. Our values, our honesty, our genuine ability to love not only went unreciprocated, we were conned of something far more valuable than money, and in a horrible fashion. We were unaware that we were engaged with what is essentially a malevolent entity who is not capable of self love, let alone love/empathy for anyone else. We did not know that the vulnerabilities & weaknesses we revealed in loving trust would be turned on us like ammunition that the Narcissist would shred our psyche and soul with in the most heinous, sadistic manner imaginable.

I am grateful to Ms. Hirigoyen for this book. I described it to my therapist and will be lending it to her. Sadly, I am sure there are many out there who have been or will be exposed to such a monster (and I do think they are monsters) and will suffer terrible and excruciating pain as a result. Therapists must understand that we do not want to dwell on the story of what happened, but we need to VENT about it and make sense of it because it can be so damaging. We must understand it's the Narcissist who is responsible for their pathology and behavior, not us. We need to examine what happened to avoid internalizing it and to restore our sanity and psyche! That isn't to say we don't have our own issues, perhaps need to strengthen our boundaries and better listen to our inner voice when it tells us "if something looks too good to be true, it is"; and especially listen if that inner voice says "something here is really not right, step back or just GO!"

If you have suffered - whether it be at the hands of a parent, a partner, a friend or even at the workplace - do yourself a favor and purchase this book. I'd give it 10 stars if I could!

Essential - Save Your Own Life!

I know there are a lot of books about emotional abuse out there, but it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say this one went a long way to actually saving my life. The author gets it - and we all know most people don't. She covers everything from "how could an intelligent woman like you a) not see this coming b) be so weak c) stay in the relationship longer than you should have" ad infinitum - and her explanations of the psychology of the abuser and the reasons for the psychology that develops in the victims are spot on and will help you feel better about yourself. She also delves into the failure of the legal system and the loss of friendships, etc. when you're in the midst of a situation that eventually becomes overwhelming. Some of the other books I read were good and were helpful, but this one was CRUCIAL. Read it, read it, read it. And godspeed.

It was systematic, intentional and heartless.

Read this book if you have been in a toxic relationship that has left you questioning your own sanity.

To address the entirety of the material is beyond the scope of this brief review, but most poignant were the comparisons to Sun Tsu’s, The Art of War (which he was forever quoting) that sent CHILLS down my spine. A list of the manipulations I experienced, from the refusal of direct communication, to the distortion of language, lies, the invalidation of my feelings and other destabilizing tactics that eroded my self esteem and left me continually doubting myself. A roadmap to confusion and control in an attempt annihilate me. Like said in an earlier review, you are prey for these soulless creatures. Don’t try and talk to friends/family that have not experienced this stalking, they will NEVER understand, leading to more harm.

I am angry. This book made me see how systematic it all was. It was intentional and HEARTLESS.

Modern PHP Ecosystem and Best Practices

I've developed PHP applications since version 4.0, back in the days when all methods were public. Now, most of those codes are considered legacy. Before reading this book, there were many gaps in my understanding of PHP 5, not only in its new features, but also in the new best practices. This book alone helped me to upgrade myself to PHP 5.6 confidently.

The author knows how to present stuff clearly. By giving real world examples, he wants to make sure you really get it. The book is easy to read and very well written. However, it is assumed the reader already knows how to code in PHP; it is not a book for beginners, or to learn PHP's basics.

Unlike online tutorials, the examples in this book are modern, for example, the author uses a component from Symfony framework to demonstrate the Namespace usage. Not only the author explains each new feature with clear examples, but he also covers best practices for each feature.

The author is well-known because of his work at www.phptherightway.com, you can get an idea on his opinions on this website. To conclude, I highly recommend this book.

Really Great Content

This book does a great job of explaining traits, interfaces and a number of other language features I was fuzzy on. It even goes through configuring a server with nginx, deploying your project and more admin stuff I needed to improve on. I was really excited to see that stuff covered so well. It's also cool to learn a bit about HHVM and Hack. Great book, highly recommended.

A Must Read for PHP Developers

Excellent ROI. I have been a web dev for almost 20 years and was a "hard-core" PHP guy for some of those years, then didn't touch PHP for over 8 years. PHP grew up while I was off in Python land! In my opinion, Josh Lockhart's Modern PHP is a must-read for any PHP programmer. Sure there are lots of things he could go into deeper, but this book was needed--an excellent overview of almost everything a PHP developer needs to know from installing and configuring PHP and web servers, code style, recommended directory structures, the newer supported object oriented concepts, testing, debugging, profiling, deployments, using Composer, and even a good overview of HHVM and Hack--enough to help you know if you want to dive in more at this time.

I will surely be referring to this book to lean on some of Josh's recommendations as I setup new projects.

A little additional Josh Lockhart plug--I learned about him when I chose to use his Slim PHP micro framework in my latest project. That project was rolled into production about 90 days ago to very happy customers. I am delighted with Slim. It does the very basic plumbing I'd rather not code and does it very well. Then it stays the heck out of my way so I can write my own PHP to do what I need to do.

About the Author
Elizabeth Bell, a resident of Antigua for 46 years, was born in Burlingame, California, grew up in Palo Alto, and moved to Antigua Guatemala at the age of 14. She graduated from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala (1976) and attended graduate school at the University of Washington (ABT). She co-authored the first of her series of books on Antigua. Elizabeth managed the city of Antigua through the Consejo Nacional Para la Protecci�n de La Antigua Guatemala (1978-87) and received a certificate in Architectural Conservation at the International Centre for the Conservation and Preservation of Cultural Property (ICCROM) in Rome (1983) and a certificate in Heritage and Tourism from the Centro Nacional de Conservaci�n, Restauraci�n y Museolog�a in Havana (1997). With emphasis on professional cultural tourism in Antigua, Elizabeth has conducted cultural tours and given lectures since 1992 as well as organizing travel arrangements Her greatest joy, however, is researching the city. She received the Guatemalan government s highest award for her preservation efforts in Antigua the Gold Award Diego de Porres by the National Council for the Protection of La Antigua Guatemala on December 1st, 2011 for her tireless efforts during 42 years in providing useful information about La Antigua Guatemala through her multiple books and lectures and her constant efforts in the preservation of the City and its Cultural Heritage .

About the Author
James G. Ogg (Professor at Purdue University, Indiana, USA; and visiting professor at China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, China) served as Secretary General of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (2000-2008) and coordinated the ICS stratigraphy information service (2008-2012). His Mesozoic Stratigraphy Lab group works on aspects of climate cycles, magnetic polarity correlations and integration of stratigraphic information. Their TimeScale Creator array of visualization tools for extensive databases in global and regional Earth history (www.tscreator.org) was used to generate many of the diagrams in this book.

Ogg has published over 100 articles and coordinated 2 books as first or co- author on aspects of stratigraphy in refereed journals since 1986, and has contributed to over 70 chapters in Deep Sea Drilling Project and Ocean Drilling Program volumes. He has also won numerous awards, including the Geological Society of America: Mary B. Ansari Best Reference Work Award for The Geologic Time Scale 2004 and most recently the 2012 PROSE Honorable Mention Award for a multi-volume scientific reference.

Gabi M. Ogg applied micropaleontology to Jurassic-Cretaceous correlations before concentrating on public outreach in geosciences. In addition to co-authoring the Concise Geologic TimeScale (GTS2008) book, she was a coordinator of GTS2012 and produced most of its the extensive array of graphics. She is the webmaster for the Geologic TimeScale Foundation (http://stratigraphy.science.purdue.edu) and for the TimeScale Creator visualization and database suites (www.tscreator.org), and has produced numerous posters and time scale cards for public audiences.

Felix M. Gradstein (Professor at Geology Museum, Oslo University, Norway; and visiting professor at University of Rio Grande do Sul, Sao Leopoldo, Brazil, the University of Nebraska, USA and the University of Portsmouth, UK) and was Chair of the International Commission on Stratigraphy from 2000 to 2008, and under his tenure major progress was made with the formal definition of chronostratigraphic units from Precambrian through Quaternary. For his fundamental work with regards to the Geologic Time Scale and stratigraphy, micropaleontology and geochronology in general, the European Geosciences Union awarded him in 2010 the Jean Baptiste Lamarck Medal. He teaches applied biostratigraphy and paleoenvironment courses and is the current Chair of the Geologic TimeScale Foundation (http://stratigraphy.science.purdue.edu).

Gradstein has authored over 140 scientific publications in the fields of geological time scales, quantitative stratigraphic methods, stratigraphy and sedimentology of petroleum basins, plate tectonics, palaeoceanography, and deep-water micropalaeontology. He has a career that spans the divides between industry, government and academia, with periods working for Esso and Saga Petroleum, the Geological Survey of Canada, and Dalhousie University. Gradstein recently won the 2012 PROSE Honorable Mention Award for a multi-volume scientific reference.
