The great antiquity of mankind upon the earth has been conclusively established. It seems singular that the proofs should have been discovered as recently as within the last thirty years, and that the present generation should be the first called upon to recognize so important a fact.

Mankind are now known to have existed in Europe in the glacial period, and even back of its commencement, with every probability of their origination in a prior geological age. They have survived many races of animals with whom they were contemporaneous, and passed through a process of development, in the several branches of the human family, as remarkable in its courses as in its progress.

Since the probable length of their career is connected with geological periods, a limited measure of time is excluded. One hundred or two hundred thousand years would be an unextravagant estimate of the period from the disappearance of the glaciers in the northern hemisphere to the present time. Whatever doubts may attend any estimate of a period, the actual duration of which is unknown, the existence of mankind extends backward immeasurably, and loses itself in a vast and profound antiquity.

This knowledge changes materially the views which have prevailed respecting the relations of savages to barbarians, and of barbarians to civilized men. It can now be asserted upon convincing evidence that savagery preceded barbarism in all the tribes of mankind, as barbarism is known to have preceded civilization. The history of the human race is one in source, one in experience, and one in progress.

It is both a natural and a proper desire to learn, if possible, how all these ages upon ages of past time have been expended by mankind; how savages, advancing by slow, almost imperceptible steps, attained the higher condition of barbarians; how barbarians, by similar progressive advancement, finally attained to civilization; and why other tribes and nations have been left behind in the race of progress—some in civilization, some in barbarism, and others in savagery. It is not too much to expect that ultimately these several questions will be answered.

Inventions and discoveries stand in serial relations along the lines of human progress, and register its successive stages; while social and civil institutions, in virtue of their connection with perpetual human wants, have been developed from a few primary germs of thought. They exhibit a similar register of progress. These institutions, inventions and discoveries have embodied and preserved the principal facts now remaining illustrative of this experience. When collated and compared they tend to show the unity of origin of mankind, the similarity of human wants in the same stage of advancement, and the uniformity of the operations of the human mind in similar conditions of society.

Throughout the latter part of the period of savagery, and the entire period of barbarism, mankind in general were organized in gentes, phratries and tribes. These organizations prevailed throughout the entire ancient world upon all the continents, and were the instrumentalities by means of which ancient society was organized and held together. Their structure, and relations as members of an organic series, and the rights, privileges and obligations of the members of the gens, and of the members of the phratry and tribe, illustrate the growth of the idea of government in the human mind. The principal institutions of mankind originated in savagery, were developed in barbarism, and are maturing in civilization.

Kelly is editor of the cyber-yuppie magazine Wired and founder of the computer network known as "The Well"; Out of Control indicates that he should turn the computer off and get outside more often. This gee-whiz hodgepodge suggests that civilization works best when it allegedly mirrors the charms and whimsies of uncontrolled systems (beehives, prairies), but the book is more noteworthy for its antiseptic self-absorption: while ostensibly lauding nature's stunning complexity, the closest Kelly comes to the real world is a fawning chapter about the widely discredited Biosphere 2 project. There's lots of emphasis on Jetson-like gadgets ("smart" electrical appliances that announce "I am a toaster") and lunatic-fringe cyber-theosophizing but no mention of the more prosaic problems that smart toasters won't fix; the only people in Kelly's definition of civilization are those with an address on the Internet. Expect requests from wan undergraduates and hipsters who agree with Kelly's own impression that he edits the "hottest and hippest magazine of the 1990s." Everyone else may safely ignore.

Very thought-provoking

This is the best sciency book out of the two dozen or so I've read this year. He doesn't just beat you over the head with basic knowledge in one subject. His chapter topics range far and wide and give you enough to get you interested. I've been going through the bibliography to see what books I could read next to explore certain subjects deeper. There were a lot of surprising things I want to learn more about. Did you know the DOD had a desert-war computer simulation that played out the Gulf War before it happened? SimCity and Populous were born of genuine simulation research? Entire ecosystems have been surviving for years sealed in glass jars? This book is loaded.

Interesting and provocative

The ideas in this book may be thought by some to be radical or far-fetched, but to those readers familiar with the behavior of complex dynamical systems, they seem quite natural. The book emphasizes the theoretical aspects of complex systems, but some natural examples of them are discussed. The author, in spite of his choice of title for the book, is not threatened by the consequences of artifically creating these systems. After all, we live and have evolved in a universe that is even more complex than the author describes. The fact that we humans can now speed up the process of creation of these systems should be a source of wonder instead of fear.
What makes this book valuable reading is that the author emphasizes the collective behavior of dynamical systems. Too often the reductionist trend in Western science obscures how the system works together, how its many parts collectively induce an emergent behavior not at all apparent in the systems "equations of motion".
Since the book is written for a popular audience, the approach is qualitative and allegorical. This purely descriptive approach does however allow a more general overview of complex dynamical systems im many different areas. The author gives a fascinating discussion of swarm systems and their advantages and disadvantages. One of the disadvantages according to the author is that they are "nonunderstandable"; but here he is mistaken, for complex systems can be understood, although such an understanding takes some effort anc computational horsepower. Also, in his discussion of network behavior the author asserts that it is "counterintuitive" and quotes "Braess's paradox" as proof of this. Dietrich Braess discovered that adding routes to an already congested network will slow it down. There are examples of this, but it is not a hard-and-fast rule, as network engineers who employ load balancing can attest to. Adding time-dependent paths can work to reduce congestion, this time-dependence not addressed in Braess's formulation of the paradox.
Some more interesting discussions in the book are allegorical, but they serve to encourage "thinking out of the box":1. The effects of isolation and boredom on the human mind: the need for the physical body to temper unruly constructions of the mind. 2. The chameleon riddle: what color will a chameleon take on if put in front of a mirror? 3.The Prisoner's dilemna. This has got to be the most widely used tool for encouraging cooperation, in spite of its simplicity and impracticality. Computer simulation of the Prisoner's dilemna with 1000 players has revealed phenomena familiar in evolutionary studies, such as parasitism, spontaneously emerging symbiosis, and long-term stable coexistence between species. 4. Physical systems as computational processes; this is the most radical of the ideas in the book, but the author does not expound upon it in any great detail though. 5. The Biosphere experiment; I only read brief news reports of this while it was going on, so it was interesting to read here a detailed account of it. 6. The need for industry to adopt "biological" methodologies: complexity is more efficient, less wasteful, and more robust. 7. Network economics: The "network company" of the 21st century will be distributed (no single location), decentralized, collaborative (outsourcing to competitors!), and adaptive. This chapter is the most practical of all those in the book. 8. The role of encryption in a digital economy, particularly "encryption-metering" and digital cash. 9. The importance of simulation in defense and industry in the 21st century: simulate before you build, simulate before you buy, and simulate before you fight. 10. The evolution machine and its resultant creation of sex; the consequent discussion of genetic/evolutionary programming. The differences between 'Lamarckian' and 'Darwinian" evolutionary programs. 11. Postdarwinism: why have no new species been detected naturally or even in computer simulations? The central thesis of Neodarwinism is that only the environment can select mutations, but not induce or direct them.
Since this book was published in 1994, there have been many advances in the areas that the author discusses. Evolutionary programming has taken off, with many applications in finance, biology, network engineering, and large-scale circuit design. Swarm robots are currently under development, with deployment just years away. Computational/intelligent agents are now managing networks, with autonomous agents just around the corner.Encryption and smart-card technologies have mushroomed along with intelligent computer virus detection. Simulation is now thought of as a "must-do" in every phase of business and industry, and simulations are now thought of as sophisticated enough to model real-world situations without any experimental "validation". Indeed, technological advancement and its application is moving forward at a dizzying rate, and seemingly...out of control?

Giddy Plagiarism

I agree with the "Chicago reader" who said this book could've used an editor, but it's one of the best poorly-written books I've read too.
Kelly's cheerleading for the decentralized, "hive-mind" mentality smacks of the giddy 1940's Tomorrowland propaganda -- oblivious to market realities, people's resistance to change and the fact that simple technologies always win head-to-head competitions with more complex technologies. Yet he makes a valiant attempt to pull a Douglas Hofstadter, and write a "Godel Escher Bach" of future technologies. None of his examples or conclusions are original, but that doesn't diminish the cumulative power of his argument.

EVERYTHING TO GAIN!!!

I was around 15 years living in India at that time with a -5.0 diopters prescription in both eyes in 1978. My father had bought this book from the store in India-an Indian reprint of the same book. I was wearing soft contact lenses at that time because it could prevent further progression of myopia and for cosmetic reasons because I was young. I have read the book from cover to cover and did whatever simple exercises I could like reading the book without glasses or bouncing a ball and focusing the movement. The hope in it became really real in 1980 when I was accompanied by my parents to one of the centers in Southern India's Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry which was propagating the Bates technique. There were people coming there year after year to have their techniques reinforced AND removing glasses. The center was accepting voluntary donations to run it. In the floor of that house they had all the things that were needed and mentioned in Dr. Bates book. One had to spend about 1.5 hours there to use everything that was in the facility with instructors to help. Since Pondicherry was a city on the beach, many people took their vacations to come there. My own experience: within merely four days, I could read the very last line on the Snellen chart which was a -2.5 diopter reduction. On returning I had to change my contact lenses to the decreased refraction. However, if one does not maintain the exercises, we go back to our old habits of reading faultily by habit and it goes back to where we started again. The benefits are usually immediate and then it is known to plateau before coming down again. The easiest way to incorporate the technique is to play tennis or ping pong without glasses which I have also done and then rest the eyes. One can also read without glasses if the book can be focused on using blinking and focusing one word at a time and without scanning. It most certainly works, so much so, that my parents had wanted to start these similar type centers in the USA, my mom and I at the least being medical doctors and my dad being naturalized in our environment. My father has since passed away. This book is least likely to cause further harm and uses principles of physics appropriately and $10 is a very small price to pay for eye health. I did NOT practice it thereafter and my faulty eye habits worsened my myopia again. At this time I have had LASIK and my vision is 20/20 from TLC. However, I wish to maintain eye health and incorporate proper techniques in my life yet again. I would also like to recommend to my friends who have similar problems and are not able to stabilize their myopia with a -0.25 increase every time they see the ophthalmologist. So on searching for this book I am so happy to find that it is still in print and available. My copy from India is treasured by me and has been with me through the years through a heavy academic load. It benefits to incorporate eye exercises as much as physical exercise in one's daily routine will be the long term solution. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Not worth the frustation or headache

I did not like this at all. I wanted to use this text and workbook for my son's 7th grade homeschool science. It was extremely wordy, long winded, and overly complicated, this is coming for a science loving teacher and student. I don't know if the creators of this text thought that more complicating and lengthiness would make it a better text book. If you went through the text to highlight what was necessary and important you could delete half the book for extra information included needlessly in the text book.

Ian Hudson is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Manitoba, Canada. He has previously co-authored (with Robert Chernomas): Social Murder and Other Shortcomings of Conservative Economics, The Gatekeeper: Sixty Years of Economics According to the New York Times, and To Live and Die in America: Class, Power, Health and Healthcare.
Mark Hudson is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Coordinator of the Global Political Economy Program at the University of Manitoba, Canada. In addition to several co-authored articles on fair trade and ethical consumption, he is author of Fire Management in the American West: Forest Politics and the Rise of Megafires.
Mara Fridell is a member of the Province of Manitoba's Priorities & Planning Secretariat and an affiliate of the Global Political Economy Program at the University of Manitoba, Canada. She researches the neoliberal social politics attending conservative labour market, environmental and financial policy, and is a contributor to the forthcoming Counting on Marilyn Waring anthology.
