A Fantastic Follow Up

In this exciting continuation of the story that began in Dark Siren, Kali's world continues to turn upside down. The young woman must now face a future while still being almost completely clueless about her past. As more and more strange things start to happen, Kali learns that a past love has paid a terrible price for the chance to win back her love. At the same time, she is dealing with her feelings for Rhane, as well as the tantalizing clues that start to unravel about who she really is. This novel is full of action, and a myriad of twists and turns. You have no clue what comes next. I can't give away any of the details, but I must tell you it is a must read.

great sequel!!

I totally love this series! This is a wonderful sequel. I love the new characters introduced and how things are playing out!! Kali is relearning things, and opening up to her memory that she thought she lost. Her abilities are blooming, and though she can't control them well, she knows she needs to learn how. She is turning into a wonderful heroine.

Rhane has some secrets we get to learn. We are now learning a lot about him, his past, and his journey to refinding Kali. He's so awesome. I could just swoon over him. :) There's still mystery, but this one is a little more romance related because Kali and Rhane are reconnecting. I want Kali and Rhane to work out so bad. I feel like they both went through way too much to not have this one good thing.

My only complaint was with Kali's memory flash scenes. It was a little jumpy and unclear at first, but it's not something that will throw you from the book. The thrill of the mysteries and pasts being unravelled along with new characters and new events will keep you glued to the pages anyways. I loved the twists, and I have come to love the characters, even the ones like River that you just aren't sure of. I absolutely love York. There's too many good things here. I can't wait for book three!! I need more :) 5 WOLFY PAWS!!

Full of unanswered questions but keeps you wanting more.

It is a slow beginning but it more than makes up for that with that ending. Man oh man this book is a good one, it sets up for an epic third book with so many secrets left for one to wonder about. Kali and Rhane are back with even more problems than they had in the first book. Kali is learning more about her past which is something I really liked, how you got to see her re-experience her past lives and how they fit together to help her with what was currently going on.

I liked also how much Kali trains to get better and stronger instead of sitting around for Rhane and the group to save her, I know that is what they say they are there for, but I also understand Kali not wanting to be weak and wanting to do something for herself. We also learn a little bit more about Rhane and what he is all dealing with that the Banewolf is not all it is cracked up to be.

The only thing I keep getting hung up on is that Rhane is so much older than Kali. I know, I know they were lovers in Kali's previous life and age shouldn't matter but she is seventeen, that has to be effecting her judgement some what. Though I will say Rhane is a good guy he could use their past as an excuse to do almost anything he wanted but love doesn't take advantage of stuff like that so it is done well.

Martin (Music of Yes, LJ 11/15/96) argues convincingly that the progressive rock movement of the early 1970s, whose pillars are the bands King Crimson and Yes, deserves consideration as important avant-garde art. While the first three chapters offer an academic, philosophical, and sociological analysis of the genre, casual fans will appreciate Chapter 4: a lengthy annotated discography of important progressive rock albums. Unfortunately, Martin's biases sometimes undercut his thoughtful arguments. He dismisses with contempt valid criticism of "prog rock" from the mainstream rock press, for example, and he fails to recognize the influence progressive rock had on the onstage excesses of 1980s "arena rock" he considers "awful." Still, Martin's book nicely complements two other recent works on the genre, musicologist Edward Macan's Rocking the Classics (LJ 10/15/96) and Paul Stump's The Music's All That Matters: A History of Progressive Rock (Quartet, 1997). Hard slogging but very thought provoking read

First, reader beware: this is a very difficult academically oriented book by a DePaul University Philosophy Professor published by what appears to be an academic press. It is not geared to general readers who want a high level overview of what many aficionados called the "Art Rock" era. It assumes you know all that and much more. It uses words I haven't used or thought about since graduate school, sometimes several times in the same sentence.
It is hard going but well worth the journey. If you love this music (and I do) you will learn much about the music, groups and individual musicians. You will also learn a lot about Marxism, sociology, the social movements and philosophical ideas that underly what is now called "progressive rock." The book is so thought provoking that I intend to read it again after reading books by the same author on "Ethical Marxism" and the progressive rock group Yes.
The only reason I did not give this book five stars is that it is burdened by a professorial pomposity that is really hard to get past. At times the tongue in cheek criticisms of other scholars are hilarious. At other times the author simply calls his academic colleagues or their ideas "Stupid." This makes one wonder if people in academia with different viewpoints have manners. The seeming effort to land the cleverest "gotcha" does detract from a book that all lovers of bands like Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Jethro Tull, Renaissance and the like will be enriched by reading.

Would have been a great magazine article

Martin is obviously a passionate, committed, and highly knowledgeable fan of progressive rock. He is fully entitled to his opinions. Unfortunately, Martin ties himself up in philosophical knots -- and envelops himself in the political correctness of tenured academia -- to justify the inconsistent categorization/taxonomy of progressive rock that ultimately derives from his tastes. This is too bad, because a more consistent and fair-minded treatise would have been more valuable. It also would have most likely not been book-length, because the tedious "Toward a Theory" chapter could have been condensed into 10 pages or less. Martin would also have known to avoid this tedium if he had read Ben Watson's "Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play"... but then Martin has no use for Frank Zappa, so of course he didn't read it.

Martin may be a philosopher, but he is evidentially not up on his Aristotlean logic. If he were, he would understand the following:

the book argues that punk rock appeared as a new wave music.

THE BOOK's IDEA OF PUNK ROCK Bill martin's argument is that punk rock appeared as a new wave of music. He completely shatters the myth of it being a type of music against progressive rock by stating that it was a great part of the rock era. The line, "By the mideighties, punk was either a 'hard-core' taste for a few people with leather jackets,and mohawks or it had merged into a larger new wave scene" is an example of biased word choise. This is not historically accurate. This resource, however, is scholarly because of the many noted historians in its bibliography. It also goes into a hardcore generation and bands that have shaped punk music. It does not recognize punk rock as an entirely new music, but views it as one large part of progressive rock history. The historical question being persued is what has punk rock provided for progressive rock? This is answered and then the book moves on to other music genres.

I could not open it on one computer. On another computer only a few of the programs worked. It was a great disappointment to me.

Pretty foolish of me to buy used product like this

Product arrived promptly, and even had a code.

But all it did was load an image of the text cover and attempt to dowmload spyware onto my system. Thank goodness my antivirus caught it.

Pretty foolish of me to buy used product like this. But at the price, I thought it worth a shot, as I think PH produces excellent science materials. Would like to chance buying a "new" copy, but now don't even trust those, as shrink-wrap is so readily accessible :-(

So now it's off to open a Castle Learning account and to search YT for chem videos. Aaah, the life of a student (or a student's mom) is never easy.... :-(

ETA: Must acknowledge that the booksellers from which I made the purchase are now trying to locate a functional set for me... Fingers crossed. Impressed by their efforts to help!!

I had been googling about POW escapes during WW II for months when I came across this book. It feels meticulously researched and it's exactly what I needed to complete my own research on a related topic. It's well-written, scholarly, and imho, authoritative. Extremely well done.

As a collector of WWII cloth maps, I have been looking for the information given in this book for over 10 years. Great Book, lots of good information, if you are interested in cloth maps this is the best on the maps printed by MI9 in England. Waiting for a book on Cloth WWII maps printed in the United States, and India.

Prospector's View on "The Ancient River of Gold"

This is a wonderful book about a fascinating subject that is often overlooked by the ordinary person looking for gold, but not by any serious prospector. Too often mining books are about the basics on how to retrieve gold and the actual geology left out; this book is a complete reversal. However, it does not read like a college textbook on geology, but rather like a geologic storybook that will blow your mind. My impression is that Raymond Wallace, like Mulder from the X-Files, is trying to describe this far-out geologic theory asking you to bear with him for awhile while you try to visualize it in your mind, holding back disbelief, yet realizing all things are possible.
He covers mountain ranges and river canyons by name in great detail and if you are not familiar with the area you are truly interested in, you will be completely lost. My only complaint are the river-maps are not clear enough for the place-names discussed in detail in the paragraphs, and correlating this incredible information to a topo map would be a monumental task
for even the most dedicated soul. However, after you are done reading what type of gold the old-timers found in the ancient river gravels that were left untouched since the dawn of time, you will be so envious it will take your breath away.
I promise, you will be in awe at the power of the mighty earth and never look at a stretch of gravel the same way ever again.
