Restoration ecology is a young field that integrates theory and knowledge from a range of disciplines, including the biological, physical, and social sciences as well as the humanities. This new textbook, written for upper-division undergraduates and first-year graduate students, offers a real-life introduction to the field and an interdisciplinary overview of the theory behind it.
Developed by ecologists and landscape architects, each of whom has been involved in restoration research and practice for many years, the focus of the book is on providing a framework that can be used to guide restoration decisions anywhere on the globe, both now and in the future. The text is organized around a restoration process that has been tested and revised by the authors in their restoration ecology courses taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison over the past thirty years.

Each chapter includes a series of "Food for Thought" questions that both help students review concepts and put them to work in solving conservation problems. The framework is designed to work with the uniqueness, uncertainty, messiness, and constraints inherent in any real-world restoration project.

Success in ecological restoration requires not only technical proficiency but also skill in the social, cultural, and political arenas. Introduction to Restoration Ecology can help students develop the skills they need to succeed in all of these areas and is a much-needed new resource.

More focused on restoration process than ecological theory
By WaterRocks
This text was required for a restoration ecology class. The text steps through the different documents that would be used in a major restoration project and gives a good review of the complexity of project management. However, in my opinion, plodding through process steps dampens the interest in this important aspect of our relationship with the earth. The practitioners who wrote this book want to share their lessons on what works and what should be done. But in covering the details about how to manage the project, sometimes the why and how of restoration is overlooked. I found the implementation chapter and case studies the most important and interesting parts of the book because they spoke about what was actually done in the field, not the planning and reporting that went into the project. I would have liked more emphasis on monitoring techniques in various situations, but the wide scope of habitat and situations means that this book has to fall back on generalities with a few case studies.
Unfortunately, I can't imagine using this text as a reference in the future. Small restoration projects such as removing invasives in a particular location, or maintaining fields against encroaching trees, or planting native trees, might use the various steps in this book, but would not be likely to use all the documentation that is the focus of the book. A large restoration project would have structure imposed by the organization that was overseeing or funding the project.
In sum, I like this book partly because I think the topic is important, but to me, it's really a project management book with some case studies, not something that will inspire people to try to fix the habitats that humans have damaged or destroyed.

and it was in great shape! I also like the book itself--rather basic
By Dan Engel
The book arrived in a timely manner, and it was in great shape!
I also like the book itself--rather basic, but at least it's clear. It also offers many examples that make the textbook more interesting.

Shallow, plays in the puddles when you want it to go deep
By emily rosenauer
Painfully oversimplified. Might be good for a late middle school or early high school group.
